Credits: 316,353 Year: 1999 Degree: Agronomy NFL: Bears MLB: Twins | CBS's Coverage Is it just me or is their coverage of the Final 4 bad? They do a good job on the rest of the tourny (except they need to show games on other stations CBS owns). Cann't they find someone better than Billy Packard to do the games. He was calling the refs out during the games, it sounded like he was rooting for Memphis, and gave KU little credit. Heck it took him 4 possitions to figure out KU was in a box and 1 (my wife figured it out before he did). I know they have to pay the bills but a commerical at every possable break, come on. Why isnt the studio crew in San Antonio? Every other media member is.

I have always thought that CBS has done an excellent job on the NCAA tourney coverage though.
It will be a said day when CBS loses the tourney, and "One Shining Moment" dies. |

I don't know if I really have anything against him, but he doesn't seem all that great either. Yet, you'd think somebody who'd been there for 34 years would seem like a legend but he just seems so average to me. |

Personally, I'm not a big fan of "One Shining Moment".
When a network pays as much as CBS did for the rights to the Tourney you are going to get a lot of promos and commercials.
Although CBS has improved their coverage over the years, they still have not matched the coverage that ESPN had back from the early 80s to early 90s when they (not CBS) covered the early round games. I don't think CBS covered the entire tournament exclusively until 1991 or 1992. Additionally, prior to 1981 or 1982, NBC carried the final rounds of the tournament.
NBC had a great announcing crew of Dick Enberg, Al McGuire, and Packer. McGuire was able to keep Packer in his place because he really knew the game.

Exactly. Gus Johnson deserves to be CBS's #1 announcer. He knows the game, is neutral, and is a joy to listen to. |

He was screaming for the Memphis player to pick the ball up so they would not get a 5 second call. That rule was changed years ago, the count stops as soon as the in bounder lets go of the ball. Nantz didn't know what to say and there was a moment of silence. Billy needs to go away!!!

I like Jim Nantz, but I'd prefer a baboon doing the color rather than Packer. When Packer let loose with the "this game is OVER" comment in the first half of the KU/UNC game, I thought Nantz was going to burst out laughing. I was cheering on UNC just so Packer would have to eat his words. I mean really... what kind of a moron says that the number one seed in the NCAA tournament is out of the game with over 8 minutes left in the first freakin' half? |
