It's a joke that 6-6 teams are in post season games.
I will allow that had the current format not been in place we all wouldn't be able to laugh at EIU's epic choke job at home last year with a bowl game on the line against no-name U.

Teams that aren't at the point where they can compete to get into the playoffs, about 103 teams, get to sit back and lose money. At least in the NFL, the teams that don't make the playoffs get first dibs at the best players coming into the league.
I just don't think that it is a good idea without a solid profit sharing plan. Completely agree here, and I hope they don't change the system, but I know I'm in the minority.

But there's no reason that there couldn't be traditional bowls at the end of the season, along with a playoff system.
It would be very similar to the system already in place. Right now, we have about 3 weeks or so of bowl games, beginning w/the whatever-dot-com-startup-has-enough-money-to-throw-away-this-year bowl to the BCS Championship. All the lower-tier bowls would still be played as a single game, while the top 8-16 teams were fighting it out in the playoffs.

No one who can make a difference in this gives a flying leap about finding a true national champ, it is all about $$$ and it always will be. Trust me on this one, if there was more money in a playoff system it would already be in place.

IMO:
take the the conference winners from these conferences:
Big12
Big10
Pac10
SEC
ACC
Big East
If any of the conference winners have 2 or more losses another school may be entered in if:
a second from the above conference list if that conference has a championship game, a mid major in the Top 10 or and independent in the top 8.
The bottom 4 play the first round with the two winners playing the top two teams. Typically the ACC and BigEast or at large would usually play in the first round.

It should be changed just for the sake of change so we can debate it more.

Like the format or not, it's here to stay. ESPN now has material to argue about for the next 6 years.

I think they should take the 11 conference champs plus 5 at large teams. The independent schools would need to join a conference if they want to be eligible for the post season playoffs (take that ND). 5 at large teams are determined by the teams with the best BCS (or similar ranking) ranking.
The first round of the playoffs can be the 8 best bowl games (Orange, Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Cotton, Capital One, Gator, and Chick-Fil-a (the last one could be changed to the Holiday or Outback bowl but I like Chick-Fil-A better and it is oh so delicious).
4 games could be played on Jan. 1 and 4 on Jan. 2 Since most schools are out of class the first two weeks they could play the second round a week later even if it fell on a weekday. They could keep the semi's and finals on a Thursday or Friday so it would not conflict with the NFL playoffs.
This would stretch college football out longer then it should be but since it is only affecting a few teams it should be fine. I would be content with this at least.
