Re: Favorite Place to Eat in College

I liked the design of Joe's I ate there a few times and always enjoyed the food. In Ames as this thread shows there are a lot of places to eat and this one just didn't catch on.

Re: Favorite Place to Eat in College

I'm saddened that so few remember (or know of) the place of pizza heaven once known as "The Pizza House". Herbed crust, high quality cheeses, sauce that isn't loaded down with sugar, and bottomless cups of pop.

Truly great pizza, since 1953, but just couldn't survive multi-generational issues.

I used to live in Ames during the summer, and got in on the very first meals that Ruttles, Superdog and Battles served. My buddies and I used to circle new restaurants like vultures, and got to talk to all three of those guys.

Anyone else remember "The Burger Baron"????

They died of excessive food quality, poor location and not enough capitalization, but for one bright shining moment, they had some killer burgers and waffle fries....

The gyros from the Pammel Ct grocery store. They were the real deal.

Chili and cinnamon rolls at the truck stop on Highway 30, which alas is no longer open

One place I found after I graduated was the Grove cafe dowtown for breakfast. It's a greasy spoon but the food is good.

Mind the gap!

The original Hombres (out past the Vet school). Great place to drink and eat.

Whiskey River burgers definitely gave CY's Roost a run for the money.

Little Dogpie. OHHH the memories!!!

The place before Hometeam was Palermo's pizza. Italian family owned it and operated. They sold to Hometeam and started another Palermo's up in another campus town. It was great pizza for the price.

One of the coolest things about "The Pizza House" was that if they didn't make something that you liked, you could bring in your own ingredients, which they would add to your pizza.

I used to keep a bunch of stuff in their cooler, and they would make it special for me and my future wife, and just charge me for a cheese pizza.

To this day, I have not been able to replicate their dough. I know it had basil and thyme in it, but I can't figure out what I'm missing, or maybe it's in the wrong proportions....

How can you not know about the Tip Top Lounge??????? Heck, you probably never spent a night in the Lincoln Lodge or at the Silver Saddle either...did you?

At any rate...some faves of mine in no particular order...Open Flame, Great Plains, Whisky River, Dugan's Deli, Wok Inn, Pizza Pit, Hickory Park.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

I worked at the Burger Baron in Okoboji one summer...great times!! We had the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Shake before DQ started the "Blizzard" concept. We also pioneered the Olive Burger...my mouth is watering as I type this!!

Re: Favorite Place to Eat in College

The Burger Baron was "Culver's" with bigger portions, imo....

And not even close to being "chain-like".
