Stipend for college athletes

Earlier this week the ESPN AM 1700 afternoon hosts, don't remember who it was exactly, were talking about providing stipends for college athletes. One was in favor, one not so much. If this ever went through it would really hurt the smaller budgets like Iowa State. The Texas's of the world would be able to pay out with little impact in their overall budget while schools like ISU would pay at a much higher percentage and make it even harder to us to compete. Let's hope it doesn't happen for several reasons.

What exactly do they get now? I've gotten into this debate several times, and I've never understood exactly what sorts of benefits (if any) they get now.

I guess as far as competing with the UT's of the world I would be against this, but part of me thinks they should get a little something in addition to the scholarship, considering how much money they rake in for the schools/conferences. I'm torn I guess.

That's a good question. Does their scholarship include tuition, tuition and housing, tuition, housing and meals? I know the football team gets access to prepared meals at times, but I'm not sure whether it's always, only during the season or occasionally during the season.

Re: Stipend for college athletes

My football scholarship covered tuition, room and board (if you lived off campus u got whatever the dorm rate was), books and a meal plan (if you didnt want a meal plan you got the money). Plus I also received the max Pell Grant on top off my scholarship. Plus on top of all that the NCAA has a fund set up which allows athletes to get $500 for their freshman year and $250 the other years in order to buy clothes.

So in my opinion athletes do NOT need to be paid or receive a stipend, if they cant make the above work then they have issues.

Don't forget the other bennies that come with that...like medical care, academic support, etc.

The other thing people don't realize is that there is a finite pool of money to support everything. If football players started getting a stipend, it would leave less for, say, gymnastic scholarships, or any of the other non-revenue sports.

Re: Stipend for college athletes

If any student athletes deserve to get a stipend it's the ones that are NOT on scholarships IMO. They put in just as much time and effort into their respective sport and still get to pay for tuition, R&B, etc. If a scholarship athlete needs money to help make it through school he/she can either get a job or take out a loan just like most other students have to do.

Wrong, they could get a job but if they take out a student loan i believe it would reduce their scholarship amount.

for example i received a marine corp scholarship and if i accepted it my football money would be reduced by the amount of the marine corp scholarship, so i turned down the marine corp money.
