I just e-mailed their coach. Hello,
You don't know who I am, and I don't expect to ever meet you. My name is Joe Waters, and I am a student at Iowa State University, with relatives and friends who live in the Des Moines, IA area, as well as numerous friends and family in other flood affected areas of the state. I was alerted to an article about your Track and Field team through www.cyclonefanatic.com, and was very pleased to read it. I think it speaks large volumes about the kind of young men and women that you have the pleasure to coach, as well as your own character in wishing to help citizens in an area where you most likely know no one. In today's media climate, these stories are so seldom reported, and it's a shame. We constantly hear stories about student-athletes who are arrested, convicted, taking money, and committing all sorts of improprieties, but these kind of stories we don't hear. Very few student-athletes who perform such acts as your team has are recognized for their actions, even though they deserve much more attention. So from a person who cares and is deeply impressed by the ethic your team displayed this morning, thank you. Thank you for putting your time and energy into a cause to help others. I just wanted you to know that there's at leasst one person who appreciates what you've done for the city of Des Moines and the state of Iowa.
Thank you.
-Joe Waters. |

A lot of teams helped out... my mom was sandbagging with her company when they were joined by some students from Washington State. Still very impressive. They represented their universities very well.

The Gene Chizik era of football continues, and, with it, a renewed attitude of pride, determination, and success. This is Cyclone Football. |

I saw a bunch of people all dressed in athletic "warm up" type gear and figured they were from a sports team, but I couldn't match their colors with any local teams I knew of. I didn't even consider athletes from the NCAA championships would be there. Let me tell you, they weren't just there for the show either, they were getting into it and working hard.
