Re: Georgia Tech to run triple option
I'm with knownothing and Bryce. I think the speed issue is going to work in GT's favor. If teams start loading the box with 8 guys then all you need is the more powerful lineman to push around the smaller, speedier guys in the box. As soon as they suck the speedy guys in and make them matchup with powerful linemen it'll help neutralize some of the advantage they may of had with their speed.
Of course, I think with the talent that GT has and has the ability to recruit, we will not see a traditional triple option offense. It'll be more of a hybrid I bet kind of like Air Force runs. Some triple option, some spread, etc. The nice thing about that is the spread option offense is built on the same principles of the triple option offenses. Just different execution.

Re: Georgia Tech to run triple option
Barry Switzer was quoted as saying the triple option is one of the greatest passing offenses in the world. The problem was nobody could stop the run so there was no reason to pass. When they did pass (4 times a game) they usually were complete for long gains.
Barry Switzer may be a cheater or whatever else you want to call him but he has national titles and a super bowl.

A well run triple option is very fun to watch. I hope it works.

Re: Georgia Tech to run triple option
Paul Johnson will pass far more than 4-5 times per game. He did at both Navy and Georgia Southern. He has not always been a triple-option coach; he used to pass tons as the OC at Hawaii.
Back when Jim Walden tried the triple option and failed, I assumed it was the offense itself; later I realized it was Walden. Paul Johnson is a long, long way from Jim Walden.

Re: Georgia Tech to run triple option
The late Walden years ’91-’94 was the most painful football I have ever watched. We ran the wishbone offense and it always seemed like were down by 21 points. Nothing makes you want to scream and pull your hair out like watching your team run the option when you’re down by 3 or 4 touchdowns. JP could quadruple the season ticket prices but the only thing that would make me give up my seats is if the Chiz went to the wishbone. -

Navy threw the ball less than 10 times in more than half of their games last year and only attempted more than 15 throws once. Navy average 10 passes per game last year, for an average of 100 ypg. That's not too bad. That's over twice as much as "4 or 5."
Navy rushed for 330 years in beating a Pitt team that allowed 130 ypg on the ground for the year. Is Pitt terrible? The same Pitt team that beat West Virginia?
Navy rushed for about 330 against one of the ACC's best teams, Wake Forest; Wake allowed 109 ypg on the ground for the year.
Paul Johnson won big at Georgia Southern and Navy. Navy had a feared rushing attack. He will win at Tech, for he is the best coach in that conference.

That's quite a bold statement, and I'm going to heavily disagree with you on that one
Edit: I'd add Frank Beamer to that list as well.

Re: Georgia Tech to run triple option
Bobby Bowden doesn't coach anymore. He's just there.

Frank Beamer, well, er...maybe I forgot about him. As far as the other three - I just doubt that any of them could have done what Johnson did at a school like Navy.

Butch Davis will have UNC in the ACC title game within the next 5 years.

You're making it sound like that Pitt was this impressive team last year - I hardly call 5-7 impressive. Did they have one great showing against West Virginia last year? Yes. But calling Navy this great team last year because they beat a less-than-good Pitt team that beat West Virginia is like saying that Iowa State was this great team because we beat a less-than-good Iowa team that beat co-conference champion Illinois or we beat an okay Colorado team that beat conference champion Oklahoma. Granted, Navy had a better record than us and probably would have beaten us early last year (although I think we would have given them a run for their money by the end of the year), it's just your reasoning is completely out of whack...
Personally I still think he's a bust at Georgia Tech if he really thinks the triple option is going to work in the ACC.
