Re: Horsecollar tackle banned in NCAA

ugh...it sucks that the Roy Williams tackle can cause injuries, but i thought the idea of the game was to bring the player with the ball to the ground? I hate all the anti-defense penalties that get thrown into the rulebook. I am so glad the NFL finally got it right and decided if a receiver catches a ball in the air, but a defender pushes him out of bounds: OMG, it's NOT a catch! That's the idea of having DEFENSE in the game people...

Couldn't agree with you more, I'm sick of the nanny rules they put in place. It started with QB's getting treated as untouchables, now it's spreading to just about everyone. Soon the defense is going to have to ask permission to tackle someone.

And I, Bruno, will dive 1,000 feet into a block of cement. On my head, yet!

I think it's similar to a facemask. You're using equipment that is used for protection against him.

I have no problem with that... seems like it is a good way to get seriously injured.

You guys had to realize this rule was a matter-of-time coming - it eliminated the injury that was associated with a particular kind of tackle

I guess my counterpoint to this argument is I don't think too many people have a problem with clipping, holding, leg whips, or chop blocks being illegal. I mean, after all, by making these kinds of blocks illegal, aren't you eventually going to get to the point where the offense has to ask permission before it makes a block? And leg whips and chop blocks have definite, proven injury risks, just like horse collar tackles.

My real solution to all of this, though, is simple - get rid of all of the pads and play Aussie-Rules or Rugby style. Have we Americans become so pansy-like that we can't take a couple of body-to-body blows like the Aussies and the English can? Of course, that'd mean no more souvenir helmets, but that'd be a fair trade IMO...

Yes Defense is the name of the game, but there comes a time when the safety of the athelete is more important. You don't see that many "horse-collar" tackles to begin with so banning them is only good sense. Anytime you use the personal protective equipment for leverage you are putting the player at risk. I agree that the five yard face mask penalty is unnecessary, but not a flagrant grabbing and twisting of the mask...same goes for the horse collar tackle. Good decision in my opinion.
