Mbakwe (Marquette MBB) pulls a Wesley

We were recruiting him pretty intensely a couple of years ago. I thought he would be a great get for our program. He really never played for Marquette after injuring his knee his freshman year.

He shocked Marquette yesterday by abruptly saying he was leaving school. Buzz Williams said he had no idea he was considering leaving.

Sweet, this will be the new fad.

Harriet Michaels: Do you actually like haggis?
Charlie Mackenzie: No, I think it's repellent in every way. In fact, I think most Scottish cuisine is based on a dare.

The NCAA will need to step in and make a Wesley rule. Serious here... programs can't handle this sort of thing ....

Exactly. Players need to give the coach and team some advance notice. A 'two weeks" if you will. Its courtesy to those who have invested time into you. To just up and leave shows lack of character and committment.

This sucks. That opens up another Scholly for Marquette. That means we lose one more player we were recruiting.

Even past that... outside of a hardship, yes. But to leave 2 months before practice... with no apparent good reason will kill MBB and the semi-equal playing field the NCAA has.

they need a 'trade' deadline .... and IMO, that deadline expires before recruiting for the next year does.

I wonder if any of Billy Gillispie's friends have been seen near the Marquette campus lately?

Some people will never let this go, I do believe.

Can't get the link to work, so I can't read the story. But in fairness to Mbakwe, I don't think you can compare it to Wesley. Mbakwe didn't play that much, and Marquette has a new coach.

The only thing that makes it suspicious/surprising is that it apparently took the kid about four months to decide he was going to transfer. Mbakwe had seemingly good reasons to transfer but chose a bad time. Wesley chose an OK time (not the greatest) but had seemingly suspicious reasons (that's debatable too, but I'm just saying).

I think this bears little resemblance to the WJ situation for two reasons:

1) He wasn't the top returning player on the team
2) Marquette has had a coaching change since last season

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.
