Texas exploring their own TV Network

The Big 12 has really dropped the ball on this issue. I wonder if Texas starts their own network, and it's profitable would that negate the possibility of a Big 12 network?

Except that Texas has to go along with the big12, so whoever owns those rights is going to get the texas games.

Without live football games, it's sort of a tough sell for most schools I'd say.

Honestly, there aren't very many fans that would want to watch the replays (relatively speaking - the sample from this group would be disproportionately skewed of course...)

If the demand was there, I suspect Fox would be doing most of this already.

If the Big XII allows that to happen, the commissioner should be fired. There is NO reason why every B12 FB game should not be televised in some form.

If you're talking about live football, yes there are good reasons why every FB game isn't televised.

If you're talking about replays, I would agree with you.

No, they wouldn't be able to sustain that like ND does. They need the stability of the Big 12 in order to make it work. ND can do it because even when they stink, they have a built-in huge fanbase, and a contract with NBC to show them, no matter how horrible they are.

They are just talking about creating a bunch of content for things that aren't already negotiated in the Big XII contract. So this would likely mean no live football games. Not that it's a big deal anyway, since Texas is generally on every week anyway.

Any Texas football network and a big XII network would be indistinguishable from each other.

Because the dedicated broadcast rights slots ensure that the networks have higher viewership, and can sell ad space at a premium allowing them to pay for the contract and make some money. On top of that, it costs money to produce a game. Games that are released for PPV often barely break even or only result in a small profit. ISU-Baylor on PPV would lose money.

It would cost a fortune to properly produce every Big 12 game every week. The only way that even the BTN can make it happen is by being on the basic cable tier.

Before the BTN every big 1132 game was on TV or had the option to being on TV. The Big 12 will not allow games that are not picked up by the national compaines to be picked up by locals. The Big 112 used to allow games that ESPN or ABC didnt pick up to be on a local ESPN plus type station, so Iowa was on TV every weekend.

As already stated in kingcy's post, the Big 11 was able to get ALL of their games on TV even before the BTN. I could watch Indiana/Northwestern games to my heart's content but couldn't watch ISU play during the same timeslot. I'm sure they made a load for advertising on those games.

Again....the Big 12's exclusive contract allows the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer. Yay for advertising money, sorry Baylor and Iowa State, no one cares about you unless you play one of the big boys.

A friend of mine likened it to the old days of televised WWF wrestling. The big name wrestlers would always be on TV but the jobbers would only be on when they got thrown to the wolves against the big boys. Same thing with the Big 12 television package. OU and Texas will ALWAYS be on TV, and we'll only be on TV in a prime slot if we're playing one of the big boys. We're the jobbers.
