Is the DMRegister on life support?
Why is it that I get more information (that I would expect to see on m.dmregister.com) from other sources and not the registers web sites? I found out here that LJ apologized. I found a better read on CRGazette about the trip to Las Vegas for ISU fans and, while there, I fould out that another uofi football player was arrested for public intox and suspended for 4 games. I am not sure that I need to go the register's sites anymore.
Didn't they cut jobs recently? When people stop reading your paper because it doesn't have the information they want, less staff would seem to propgate their problems.
With the lack ISU reporting and lack of real journalism regarding anything negative about our rivals, I think I can actually take their site off my links list.

The register online is crap all photos and fluff and news blurbs about people who steal. But I do enjoy seeing who got drunk on the weekend.

Re: Is the DMRegister on life support?
On the front page of the Registers website today there was a headline story regarding a 17 year old female who was stealing from a local Target. You have to be kidding me. That's the biggest news in the city. The Des Moines Register is terrible.

Re: Is the DMRegister on life support?
Ever since Gannett bought the Register it has ceased being a local paper. The only stories they print are ones they copy from wire services, and the only "reporters" they have don't go out finding and investigating stories, they sit in the office and 'blog' while surfing the internet for stuff they can publish.
Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good. Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better. Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step. My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk,superdorf, clones_jer. That is all. -
Re: Is the DMRegister on life support?
It's funny. I was just thinking about this the other day. It's sad they haven't taken the reigns as "new media".
The thing that used to keep them from being able to compete with the TV stations was that they didn't own the production and distribution means to compete. The internet levels that, I think. They should be just as much involved in reporting on stories of interest as KCCI or WOI or WHO-TV. Live streams of photos. Live reporting ala twitter. Live interviews. A more creative way to sell and trade stuff than craigslist even.
There 's no reason that they shouldn't be taking advantage of that, other than the fact that the whole newspaper industry is so stuck in it's ways.
They are stuck somewhere between "journalism" and "entertainment" and I think they do a pretty horrible job of both, to be honest.

A politician would call the paper a fluff at this point. It has slid downhill since the last century.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -

I worked there from before Gannett bought it until after, and it was decent until Charlie Edwards left and Gannett put their own puppet in there, after that it has been downhill ever since. They have not won a Pulitzer since they took over, when before, they would win one about every 4-5 years. It puts out crap on a daily basis, and the sad thing is, when I left people didn't seem to care.

Re: Is the DMRegister on life support?
Anyone trying to sell ads right now has to be in a tough position. There are so many options, and I get so many calls at work from ad people that I cannot possibly return them, or I wouldn't get anything else done. It would probably help their case if they were a little more in tune with their audience, and a little less partisan. -
Re: Is the DMRegister on life support?
Did anyone else pick up their Saturday morning paper and notice how little high school football coverage there was?? I think there were writeups on only THREE local games!! Have they fired all the local sports writers except Keeler?

Re: Is the DMRegister on life support?
The Register is a joke, I haven't read it since I quit delivering the worthless thing and even then I only read it because I got it for free. Tim Griffin's Big 12 Blog. at ESPN.com is always loaded with Big 12 news and quotes and it's constanly updated throughout the day. ESPN - Big 12
