Chuck Long fired at San Diego St.
Also on the staff were numerous ex-Cyclone coaches:
Bob Elliott
Chris Ash
Mike Nelson

Re: Chuck Long fired at San Diego St.
Hard fall for Ash. Supposedly one of our better assistants under D-Mac.

Re: Chuck Long fired at San Diego St.
I loved Mike Nelson. Maybe we could hire him back here?

Re: Chuck Long fired at San Diego St.
coach nelson was friggin hillarious but maybe he'd be a d-line assistant cause pelton is an extremely good coach
"Day after day, situation after situation you do things the right way. If you do things the right way, in life, you are going to be successful. I'm not just your football coach; I'm not just here to win games. I could not be prouder of who we are and who we are becoming, together. You do things right in the classroom, off and on the field; that's whats's makes us Cyclones and that's what our culture's all about."

I can see Long and Elliott joing the Snyder staff at K-State.

I wonder if Snyder respects Long as a coach at all; he may be old, but he's not dumb...

Re: Chuck Long fired at San Diego St.
I can't speak to Long as a coach, but he was the best COLLEGE QB I ever watched play. Time and again, he threw the ball to a spot that only the receiver could make the catch. It was incredibly frustrating to watch when he played against ISU.
Of course, his supporting cast had a little to do with that also. But man, was he good.

Ash can't wait to get back to Iowa.

Elliott was our DB coach with Coach Ash as his grad assistant, Skladany was our Def. Coord. the ENTIRE time Mac was here. The years he was here we went to bowl games, so I think he was a pretty good coach.
As for Long he ran a pretty good office at Oklahoma be moving to SD St.
I can see long, elliott, ash and nelson all joining the K State staff.

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good. Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better. Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step. My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk,superdorf, clones_jer. That is all. -

I can see long, elliott, ash and nelson all joining the K State staff. Elliott was the assistant head coach under Mac, so I assume he had control over more than just the secondary.
His defenses at K-State got worse and worse - his last two years the defense gave up an average of about 30 ppg, and 350-360 ypg. That's not what K-State was used to when they were winning.
Stoops stripped Long of his play-calling duties his last year at OU. That doesn't show much confidence to me.

Cost of living was (is) a lot higher in San Diego and for what some of them were getting paid, they were a lot better off in Ames.

I can see long, elliott, ash and nelson all joining the K State staff. Larry Coyer was the D-coord for Mac in his 1st 2 years. He also held the same post for a couple of years in the early 80's for Donny Duncan. Skladany was brought in when Coyer took his pipe and moved on to Pitt.

Re: Chuck Long fired at San Diego St.
I don't get this whole "only give a coach three years" thing. Fire him, then he goes out and beats UNLV.
The administration actually had to go to donors and ask for the money to buy him out. It's not as if they were calling for his head. -
Re: Chuck Long fired at San Diego St.
People were calling for his head. The administration simply had to get their ducks in a row because there is zero state or university money to pay a fired coach.
It sounds like the state is going to have to cut funds going to the Cal State system as part of the plan to sign a budget. The university president is about to announce a huge increase in student fees just to keep the athletic program alive. SDSU absolutely needs football to win and bring in money. If it doesn't win in the next five to ten years there probably wont be a football program to worry about.
