Re: Sampson to receive NCAA's harshest penalty
I guess it's just me, but all this over...too many phone calls? Paying players, fixing grades, illegal inducements, yeah, that'd be big, but...phone calls? Don't see the fuss, unless the lying can be proved...

Re: Sampson to receive NCAA's harshest penalty
The only way to stop bad behavior is to sanction the University. Reggie Bush and his family members received $300,000 while he played at USC yet he still has the Heisman Trophy and USC still has their national title. The athletic department turned a blind eye. Should USC suffer now? I say yes. This will prohibit similar behavior in the future. -
Re: Sampson to receive NCAA's harshest penalty
You know what is sickening... Sampson is coaching for the Milwaukee Bucks now.
How could you work with this guy... He is like the Vic Mackey of college basketball.

Re: Sampson to receive NCAA's harshest penalty
Indiana should have to suffer some penalties they did hire a coach they knew was dirty.

Second, why should the new coach and the new players have to suffer for something that clearly wasn't their fault?

Reminds me a lot of a quote by Papa Titus...

Same thing here they KNEW what they were getting, but they wanted to win...the program should be punished...any other school would have. Oklahoma doesn't appear to have suffered much from Kelvin's mis-deeds at that institution.
IU did suffer, so get off your high horse.

In these situations I believe you should remove the problem (Sampson and maybe some Admins.), and the current players, Crean and fans were not the problem. Sampson is gone, and will be stuck as an assistant coach the rest of his life unless he resurfaces at Soutwest Obscure State. Plus, this way Crean is not at Marquette stealing our recruits, someone else is now . Everyone associated with IU when this happened is pretty much gone. New coach, New AD, entirely new roster of players. IU had 1 scholership player remaining after Crean started - a kid named Kyle Taber that hadn't seen the floor, and doesn't look like he ever should.
The team went from a ranking in the top 10 when allegations revealed (by IU no less) to potentially the worst D-1 team.
Keep in mind what I just said - IU DISCOVERED and REVEALED the improprieties of Samscum. They weren't 'caught' - they put a process in place when Sampson was hired to make sure he was policed, and guess what? he was.
Some of you want the death penalty, but what kind of signal does that send to NCAA programs that are policing themselves? Turn yourself in, and we'll give you the death penalty??? Really would encourage programs to cover things up rather than self-report, don't you think?
Some of you really need to do your homework on things before spouting baseless opinions.

Re: Sampson to receive NCAA's harshest penalty
Personally, I like the move towards punishing the people that are found to be doing something wrong (like Sampson in this case) as opposed to punishing the innocent (like the current IU staff and players).

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes. -
