He took huge steps forwards, we took steps backwards.
I'm happy with Gene Chizik as our coach but to bash Brewster is stupid. Brewster took over a team that had been to five straight bowl games, top 25 recruiting classes under Mason and blew them up his first year, and won seven his next with a weak schedule. Mason won 7-8 every year. Now Brewster wants to do a total makeover of his team.

Brewster and Kelly both inherited better players than what Chizik inherited. If Brewster can turn things around quickly in terms of W/Ls, Chizik can too but he needs to fill some holes on defense. I like the fact that ISU didn't lose to anyone 55-0 this year. Mason 2002 Minnesota 8-5 2003 Minnesota 10-3 2004 Minnesota 7-5 2005 Minnesota 7-5 2006 Minnesota 6-7 Winning percentage = 60.3% Dantonio 2004 Cincinnati 7-5 2005 Cincinnati 4-7 2006 Cincinnati 7-5 Winning percentage = 51.4% McCarney 2002 Iowa State 7-7 2003 Iowa State 2-10 2004 Iowa State 7-5 2005 Iowa State 7-5 2006 Iowa State 4-8 Winning percentage = 43.5% -
Re: Still want Tim Brewster?
Mason will be a good hire for someone. He had no personality, but knows how to win with programs that are not in the top echelon. He did that at Kansas as well.

Re: Still want Tim Brewster?
If its possible to look back at the search time, you'll see I was hugely on the Kelley bandwagon. I know several guys that coached with him and he's a good guy.
I have nothing against Chizik, I just wish BK would have got a sniff. He's won everywhere he's been, as a HEAD coach.
Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating. -
Re: Still want Tim Brewster?
I don't want Brewster, I'm very confident in Chizik.
But I do want 7 wins. And I don't care who they are against.

I'm a Chizik fan, but at some point, I would love to see Steve Loney back at Iowa State in some capacity. I really think he's a brilliant offensive mind and he put together some amazing offensive lines.

If those classes were so stellar then why are so many Freshmen and Sophs having to play? I will show you two good reasons we haven't won games and I saw this coming two years ago when we failed to adress needs on the lines...
Defensive Line recruiting
2006 Austin AlburtisDE 6-22604.75.4 Dallas, TX Collins EbohDE 6-4250-- Mason City, IA Nate FrereDT 6-22705.15.4 Muscatine, IA Patrick NealDE 6-02254.755.4 West Des Moines, IA John RichardsonDT 6-12454.615.3 Humble, TX
2005 Stephon DaleDE 6-3230-5.0 Fort Myers, FL Eric SchultzDE 6-52254.915.3 Beaver Dam, WI Thomas PattonDE 6-42804.8- San Francisco, CA John MachadoDE 6-32404.7- Fulton, MS Stephon DaleDE 6-3230-5.0 Fort Myers, FL
How many guys there are solid, Big XII starting defensive linemen? How many are playing?
We can go over the offensive line and Dbacks later...

We can go over the offensive line and Dbacks later... I never said Mac's classes were stellar, for one thing. They obviously weren't. But if we are hanging our hopes on recruiting to turn this thing around, 62nd isn't going to get it done. This year's class will likely be ranked lower. It's at 74th right now.
Having said that, every program experiences turnover with recruits. We're starting to see the same thing with Chizik with Bates leaving and rumors that others are having second thoughts as well. And I recognize they are just rumors, but they come from a pretty good source.
Of the guys you listed, it's pretty obvious to see who's contributing and who's not. But the thing you're missing is that the majority of them never stuck with the program. That's turnover. The program (coaching staff) is partly to blame for that, but not totally. Once again, every program experiences turnover. Mac just had a lot of it his final two years.
Eric Schultz was injured and had to quit football. Eboh couldn't get the academics down. Stephon Dale had promise (you listed him twice, by the way), but he either got homesick, had off-field issues or academic issues. I'm not sure what the story was with him.
Patton was just a flat out evaluation miss, a big-time bust. Machado contributed some, but not much. I expect Martin will be another Machado. John Richardson also showed promise but left for some reason. Patrick Neal, of course, was switched to TE/HB because he's really not big enough to play DE. He's been contributing, especially later in the season. And Frere and Alburtis are also contributing, one as a starter and one as a backup.
But again, I wasn't defending Mac's recruiting. He obviously didn't get the job done on some of his classes. But I don't see much improvement with this staff. Sure a lot of youngsters are playing, but some of that has to be attributed, not to talent, but to need. We need them to play because of all the defections we've had.
