I for one find the practice a little risky for a program. If you keep pulling the rug out from under players who qualify and ask them to greyshirt it could earn the coach a poor reputation among potential recruits.
Over signing is a despicable practice and it should quite frankly be made a violation of NCAA rules. However, I don’t see it going away. I think a good strategy for a school like ISU would be to leave a couple of open slots each year and go after a few guys from elite programs that were victims of over signing. K-State is not an elite program but I think this is how we got Kennard Banks.
Very interesting read, especially the example cited on Nick Saban. I'm impressed that the Alabama football department has such a strong grasp of where each scholarship player and signee is, such that they can predict the future. I wonder how they knew they'd get two scholarship players arrested for dealing drugs so as to free up scholies for the over-signed newbies? Coincidence or conspiracy?
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please. - Mark Twain
Does anyone know if we have schools oversigning in the Big 12 like the SEC?
McCarney oversigned a few times. I remember a class of around 30.
I really hope that Nutt and Ole Miss get caught in a bind here. Unfortunately, the only drawback to oversigning is bad press. The worst thing that can usually happen is a mad HS coach and a mad family. Nutt doesn't care, he'll just run a few guys off. I'd like to see the NCAA limit the number of COI's that you can accept to 30. That seems fair. 37 or 40 is way too many.
It is starting to make more sense why Ole Miss signed so many guys, probably not sure how many can make it to campus. This was really taking a chance on a guy, the whole using a credit card of a classmate that had been dead for 6 months already is just a bit disturbing.

When Bama oversigned last year someone asked Saben about the 85 number and he said that by the begining of school it would work itself out as some kids won't come back to school, others won't go out since they won't play, some freshmen may not qualify
