Just another foolish thing about the whole automatic bid thing...why should the conference tourney winner be given the automatic bid? Shouldn't the best team over the long haul of the conference season get the bid? I know this decision is up to the conferences, but it just never quite made sense to me.

I think it's the conferences' prerogative to have a conference tournament (in order to make the conference more money) - therefore they have to give the winner of that tourney the auto bid. Want to give the auto invite to a team that deserves it? Get rid of the conference tourney. It's how the Ivy League does it (and how the Pac 10 and Big 10 used to do it - but making more money became more important).

I'd have no problem with that. Also, I would suspect the NCAA could mandate that the regular season conference winner get any automatic bid for that conference. Let the conferences have a meaningless money-grabbing tourney if they want to.

I doubt that the tournaments would continue to be "money-making" if winning it didn't mean something...

Mid-majors getting at-large bids is a joke. Play in real conference, and then we'll talk about at-large bids. I feel no sympathy for St. Mary's and Creighton.

Disclaimer: There are exceptions. See Xavier or Butler.

I agree! Hey Creighton - if you really want in the NCAA's, don't get blown out by Illinois State in your conference tourney.
Same with St. Mary's - they looked awful, even with their star back.
Both had their chance last weekend. No tears for them.

Prior to that loss, Creighton had won 11 straight, including a win over UNI at UNI. The tourney loss was to the third place team in their conference. It was a bad loss, but nevertheless, it was just one loss.

I guess the low and mid-major conferences must make a bunch of money from the tourney format as it is, or else they would be lobbying for something else.

The Creighton AD Bruce rasmussen is thinking about going to play majors at their home court in the future - maybe they can play in Ames for a no return visit.

If we were good we could get that, or a two for one. Until we are good they gain nothing by playing us. They want to INCREASE their SOS. They already played DePaul this year, I suppose they could trade us for them - useless games against big conference teams.

Not that I'm happy about that...

You know, you're right. After looking again at Creighton's resume, I'd be ****** as hell. Their RPI was higher than several Big Ten teams that got in. They had a great year, and teams like Michigan and Arizona getting in over them is not right.

Let's say Creighton does trade out three of their non-con wins to play at three major conference schools. Likely, they lose all three. Let's give them two wins in their conference tourney, but they still lose in the championship game. They now become 25-10 with a better SOS, but fewer wins and more losses. Is that enough to get them in over Arizona or Wisconsin, or does it really come down to them (or another mid-major) having to win the conference tourney?

Another problem is that when schedules are made, you never know what the SOS of your opponent will end up being during the year you actually play them. Unless you go for the big guns like UNC, Duke, Kansas, etc., scheduling for SOS is not a certain thing.
