Ferentz ahead of Paterno and Tressel? Heck, Rodriguez in front of Paterno and Tressel? What a joke.

Exactly. Even if you don't like the Ferentz ranking, this #2 is a clear joke.

Ferentz and Rodriguez ahead of Tressel and Paterno tells you all you need to know about this. As if "Dienhart" didn't do that already...

    11. Paterno. The guy hasn't coached in years!

I really think Fitz is a star in the making. If he can take Northwestern to a bowl game consistently, than he should be considered the top coach in the conference. Thats a tough job

I think KF got the nod for #1 because he's done more with less. But if that is indeed the logic, how in the heck is Fitz at #8? How hypocritical.

Tressel is the runaway #1. By the largest margin of any other coach in any other conference.

OSU has tradition but what he has done in his time at OSU is unbelievable. He has dominated the Big 10 year after year

Tressel, Carrol, Stoops, Brown, & Meyer are the guys I would put as the top five coaches in the country (not necessarily in that order). Tressel is #1 in the Big Ten and it isn't even close.

But the article isn't based on anything factual or scientific. It's just one guy's opinion -- and it isn't necessarily even his real opinion, it's his way of getting people to read his stuff and talk about it, so he becomes somehow important. it doesn't mean anything.

That's kind of like being the toughest muppet, but it still doesn't mean Tressel isn't the best coach in the Big Ten and one of the best in the country.
Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

    3. who cares

In terms of recent tradition, Tressel, Ferentz, and Paterno are a cut above the rest. Tressel just happens to be in a league of his own. And he's got a nice sweater.

edit: If it weren't for the 9-4 mark this season, I'd have left Ferentz off the list.

You can factor in other things, such as player discipline, as well. Bottom line, you may want to re-think your opinion.

Nope. How many conference championships has Mangino won? How many top 10 finishes has KU had? What's his overall record at KU?

I don't think there is ANY program in the country (save for KU themselves) that would take Mangino over Ferentz. This isn't even really a debate.

If you are co Big 10 champs, does anyone notice?!?!

I bet you there are some schools that would take Mangino over Ferentz.

You're edit helps, but let's look at the facts to see how ridiculous the ranking is:

Since 2005, KF has a .500 mark in the B10 (16-16). He has a 1-3 record v. Northwestern, 2-2 record v. Indiana. Does anyone believe those teams have more talent than Iowa?

During his career, he has a losing record v. ISU (so does this mean if DMac got a B10 head coaching gig he would be ranked #1?)

I think KF is a good coach, but seriously, the day any so-called journalists start using facts and research again before they write an article I will be amazed.

Re: Rivals ranks the BT coaches

I believe it goes in cycles. The hawks, like it or not, may actually be poised for a good season this year. Not sure if they will ever relive the glory of their back to back Big 10 championships, but he's got them in a good spot. It doesn't mean Ferentz isn't a good football coach. Iowa has some tradition, but not compared to Ohio State or Michigan.
