BCS rejects MWC proposal

Bowl Championship Series presidents have rejected the Mountain West Conference's playoff plan.
The MWC proposed an eight-team playoff system that would allow greater access to the national championship game to teams outside the six most powerful leagues. The BCS presidential oversight committee rejected the concept during a teleconference on Wednesday.
"There was no overall support for the proposal, although some conferences were interested in considering certain elements of it in the future -- particularly those related to revenue, access and governance of the BCS arrangement," said University of Oregon president David Frohnmayer, the outgoing committee chairman, in a statement.
Frohnmayer added that all 10 conferences and Notre Dame generated reports that backed the same conclusion: They want to retain the current postseason format and comply with the current television contract.
"I believe we all agree that no system will ever be considered perfect, particularly by those conferences and institutions whose teams are not chosen in any particular year," Frohnmayer said. "But the BCS is the best postseason arrangement that has ever existed in college football. I say that after reviewing the matter from all standpoints, including student-athlete welfare, fan enjoyment, the academic calendar, the significance of the regular season, preservation of the bowl system that benefits a broad base of universities, and business.
"In the last six years, I've read pundits, heard the pronouncements of broadcasters and collected several cubic feet of e-mail printouts from advocates of an NFL-style playoff system. Even those that go beyond sound bite certitude share two intertwined and fatal deficiencies: They disrespect our academic calendars and they utterly lack a business plan."

I think the later of the two reasons is the reason you won't see a playoff anytime soon.

The BCS committee would have no problem "disrespecting their [collective] academic calendars" if there was a legitimate business plan.

Same thing I thought. If the people that run the BCS expect us (the fans) to think they give a damn about the "academic calendar", someone needs to slap them.

The first round of the Mountain West Conference's fight with the BCS is over.


The conference announced Wednesday evening that it would sign the contract between the BCS and ESPN, ending a six-month campaign to change the BCS and the way it chooses its national champion.


The Mountain West was the only conference that hadn't officially signed the agreement, which runs through the end of the 2013 season
Earlier in the day, the Western Athletic Conference, which was having reservations about signing, voted unanimously to sign the agreement.


The Mountain West Conference released a statement Wednesday afternoon regarding its decision:


"... The Mountain West believes it has no choice at this time but to sign the agreements. If a conference wishes to compete at the highest levels of college football, and the only postseason system in place for that is the BCS, no one conference can afford to drop out and penalize its football programs and student-athletes
The Mountain West said it has no plans to stop pushing for BCS equality, but for the next four years, their arguments will be quelled.

"The Mountain West will continue its efforts for change, including a request for dialogue with representatives of the BCS. Our goal is to ensure the eventual outcome of these endeavors is what our universities and student-athletes need, what the vast majority of American sports fans want, and what is long overdue: an equitable system."

Once again the NCAA, college presidents and the BCS have shown what pompous, arrogant idiots they truly are. Anyone who thinks the lack of a playoff system has anything to do with the "academic calendar" is unbelievable gullible. It amazes me that this card is continually played.

The NCAA, college presidents and the BCS remind me all to much of politicians...in spite of what the public wants and in spite of what really makes rational sense, they simply thumb their collective noses and do what they want to do. To heck with reason, we have a better answer.

If student academics were the issue (which, of course they aren't) someone still has to explain why it is not an issue in all of the other NCAA football divisions and the other NCAA sports.

As we all know, the bottom line is money and the clout of the bowl "cartel."

And as a side bar, someone has got to prove to me that over the past few seasons the Mountain West Conference isn't at least on an even keel with the Big East. The bottom line is that Utah, BYU and the remainder of the Mountain West are getting hosed by the BCS system.
