What the heck is going on at Michigan?

Well the Detroit Free Press broke this and they aren't known for siding with Michigan. They also got the breaking info from mainly transfers who were unhappy for some reason or another.(Toney Clemons, who transferred to Colorado and should get along well with Cody Hawkins since they both think they are about 5 times better than they actually are). I just can't believe this is THAT big of news. I am not an insider but I am guess their are alot of "voluntary" workouts that really aren't voluntary in pretty much every school. If you think Urban Meyer is working his guys only 20 hours a week you need to wake up. Same goes with any top tier program. The reason I think this is big is because Michigan is a power, they had a terrible season last year and now the vultures are flying and taking any little thing they can. Michigan will investigate, all of the players will have signed sheets stating compliance and this will be done with in time for Michigan to go 7-1 in the Big Ten.

Do people really think ISU doesn't have "voluntary" programs that attendance is pretty much required at? I would be absolutely shocked if we didn't have lifting, conditioning, 7 on 7, etc stuff that keep our players busy. We always hear about how sports are a full time job...

Absolutely, no one really believes that any D-1 BCS conference team is complying with this rule, but the smart thing is that no one can prove it. Heck, in HS we had "captains' practices" that were mandatory.

If Michigan does get nailed for this (which I don't think will happen), the whole coaching staff should be run out of town, for being unable to run a D-1 program.

You, obviously, did not read Tornado Man's post earlier in this thread. Most of us believe that probably just about every DI school in America is stretching this rule to the max...but he does not.

What is interesting about this 20 hour rule is that the time taken to play the actual game counts towards the hours. So that takes 3-4 hours off the 20 hours right there. I'm not sure if flying to and from an away game counts towards the hours but I know that LSU is going to spend the entire flight back from Seattle (they play UW on Saturday evening) reviewing game tape from the game they just played.

Clearly, there are forces at Michigan that are working for the demise of Rich Rod. By the way, if you ever want to know why Tommy Bowden bombed at Clemson it is because Rich Rod left him to take over WVU. He had been Bowden's OC at Tulane and Clemson for a year or two. Bowden built his name by leading Tulane to an undefeated season several years ago and used that to get the Clemson job. Tulane was undefeated because of the work Rodriguez did as the OC. If Michigan gives Rodriguez the time, he is going to have Michigan running circles around all of the other plodding teams in the Big 10.

I agree. 100%. I just don't know if he fits the Michigan mold. I will never argue that he cannot be successful. If he gets the guys he wants and Billy Martin allows him to coach, the rest of the Big Ten will be in deep **** because he can create such a dynamic offense. I am just saying he started in hole right away because people wanted Les Miles, Brian Kelly etc. They wanted an "old school guy preferably with Michigan ties. I also agree with the fact that he should be in hot water if they are disciplined for this. NO other big name programs have been punished for this so if he gets caught and we lose anything significant, it's just embarrassing.

Don't take credit away from Al Davis. He is solely responsible for that ground driving. What an idot he is.i

The Team was the best team in the AFC for 3 straight years.

The team got old.

They have not drafted great that is their problem.

Cable seems to have turned a corner with this team.

Uh, breaking news: "gameday" counts as three hours towards the 20- hour rule, regardless of the travel beforehand, length of game, etc.

I think RRod will give up before he ever gets the horse in Ann Arbor on it's legs.

Michigan will be lucky if RR doesn't sneak down to take over Clemson or some other southern program where all he has to do is coach football.

Of course Iowa State's "voluntary" workouts in the summer are pretty much required - or at least absence is frowned upon.
However, I doubt that many schools require 8-10 hours of the players' time on Sundays after games, as has been alleged...I know Iowa State doesn't.
C'mon - some Michigan players were interviewed in the Free Press who didn't even know about the 20-hour rule. That raises some eyebrows...

It's not the player's job to know NCAA rules, it's their job to work their ***** off for their scholarship. And it doesn't matter if it's hard or tiring, you're essentially getting a free education to play a game. There are 10 guys right behind you willing to step in that never got the shot to play at Nametheschool

So now we're just debating the level of rulebreaking. Honestly this is the biggest nonstory ever. Nothing will come of this. They tracked down some freshman and some malcontents and cultivated a story. This could have been written anywhere as Deace said this morning. He quoted the same paper from last year where Javon Ringer talked about putting in 10 hour days every day.
