The team got old.
They have not drafted great that is their problem. Cable seems to have turned a corner with this team. You apparently did not see the Saints v. Raiders game this past Saturday. It looks more like the Raiders are driving over the cliff than turning the corner.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes. -

However, I believe the CFB HC job is tougher at almost all of the "southern programs" than it is at most of the northern programs because of the expectations, passion for, and focus on FB in the south. CFB HCs in the south have a lot of constituencies to attend to and a lot of pressure to deal with. Only a few programs in the north have the same level of scrutiny...and Michigan certainly is one of them.
My guess is that you are implying that southern schools cheat and northern schools do not. You would be wrong if that is what you are implying.

C'mon - some Michigan players were interviewed in the Free Press who didn't even know about the 20-hour rule. That raises some eyebrows... So ISU does no film study after games?
Why is it so shocking that the players don't know this rule?
I think the fact they do not know what the rule is (which is no surprise) is part of the reason these kids told the reporter what they did. From what I understand, training room time (icing swollen joints, massages, etc.) does not count against the 20 hours. If a kid goes in on Sunday and watches 3 hours of game tape and spends 3 hours in the training room he would probably tell someone that he spent 6 hours on Sunday on FB...the reality is that by this rule...he spent only 3 hours in my example.

Heck, I was thinking about how much time my son put in for basketball and baseball last year in HS and it was more than 20 hours per week for both sports...between practices, weightlifting, games, and meetings.

I think WVU was a flash in the pan. If he would have stayed they could have perhaps sustained it.
I think any coach following LLoyd Carr had big shoes to fill. Maybe that's why Les Miles didn't take it. Maybe he will in another couple years. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. As it may end up, Rich Rod may miss this one anyway. But you have to at least take a long and serious look when a program like Michigan comes a knocking. Safety and comfort is one thing (WVA), but a competitor would want to be the cream of the crop. I'm sure the competitive side of Rich Rod trumped the practical side here.

I would love to hear from the guy on this site that played for ISU under McCarney...ISUFBCurt I think is his name on the site.
It would be nice to hear his take on this since he actually was a FB in college. He could give us a better perspective on the time commitment these FB players have to make and what the difference between "voluntary" and "mandatory" is.
