But, from what I have learned, when you keep your thumbs under the bar it can "turn off" some of the muscles in your forearm. It also prevents you from holding the bar correctly with your hands. Your hands need to be in a neutral position, rather then all bent back. Which is another reason why I don't understand holding your thumbs like that.

Re: USC running back drops weight bar on throat
Wow, sad deal...just saw a report that he is out for the rest of this season. Unbelievable...a strength coach was spotting him too...not another player that might have been screwing around.

I heard he was in surgery for 7 hours.
Tough break for the kid.

Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers. -

Just more proof that you don't screw around in the weight room. Not saying that's what happened here at all. Just saying that if this kind of accident can happen when people are taking what they're doing seriously, imagine what can happen if someone is just screwing around...

I can guarantee you that every coach in America...HS, college, and pro will be making mention of this to try and ensure that safety is given the priority it should be in the weight room.

Wow. I would find a new spotter, someone wasn't doing they job.

Re: USC running back drops weight bar on throat
I wonder if he had the clips on the bar to keep the weights in place. I always thought those were just a terrible idea. The plates may move around a bit, but at least if somethiung happens they will slide off right away.

This is a tragic accident, IMO. Hope he can come back and be ok.

The damage would have been done to the throat before the weights would have slipped off.

Damage would have been done already, if it happened as fast as most accidents do in the weight room. Originally Posted by ISUFan22 I think blaming the spotter here is quite premature. This is a tragic accident, IMO. Hope he can come back and be ok. This. I think somebody said the weight was 270 lbs? For a football player, thats not very much. I'm sure a spotter was behind him, but when that happens, it happens so fast that you barely have time to react. Nothing can prevent a freak accident like that. Spotter's are there to assist you and to aid you in a final rep (in one you might not get alone), for some accidents when the wrist or arm gives out, or a bar slips, it happens so fast that you just can't do anything about it.
