Wow. I'm actually impressed by Herbstreit. That's the closest thing to actual journalism I've seen from a talking head on ESPN in a very long time. Agree or disagree with him, that's a strong opinion and well stated.

Last big win? Last big bowl win? How many championships?
My point is they beat up on pretty soft schedules when they have good records. Lately when they get to big games they get beat. They haven't been anyone of note in I don't know how long. If you consider the Cotton bowl big they have won 5 "big" bowls and according to the quoted, they have won 6 bowls in the last 20 years. Not too many of those came from the last 10. I know ND is relevant as far as coverage, but they don't scare anyone they play. They aren't very competitive with USC, the one big chance they have every year to prove something. Michigan has owned them as of late in a not so good era of football there.
Yeah-things are down. The schedules turn out to be better than you might expect. S Cal was a 1 touchdown loss. Screwed out of a NC in 1993.
Look-I'm not saying they're great or anything, I'm just saying they're not irrelevant. I don't think any D Coordinator they face thinks they're irrelevant (I know...O Coordinators lick their chops)
I have been a ND and ISU fan my whole life. ND is really down right now. They really have not been in big picture for quite some time either. Most fans can admit that. There is one thing I can say for sure though about ND and this is coming from a huge ISU fan, the cyclones has absolutely no business talking trash about any team. I wish this were not true but we are by far one of the worst teams the last 20 years in college football. We were the joke of the Big 8 and now the same can be said of the B12, we have almost no tradition in football (besides getting wasted in the parking lot) and our few bowls we have gone to have all been garbage bowls. Lets try accomplishing a few things remarkable before talking trash.
Look I respect Kirk but he will always hate ND. When he played at OSU Lou Holtz did not want to play them because he said they were not good enough. It was an arrogant and bonehead move on Lou's part. Kirk will always be biased towards ND. It would be the same if Ricki Stanzi became a gameday announcer. Do you think he would give ISU a chance?
That one touchdown lose was not that close. I am not saying the are irrelevant as far as all things considered. I just think they are quite a way from competeing right now.
IMO they are a defensive coordinator away from being undefeated. I know that is the Hawkeye way of looking at things, but when you lose 6 games by an average of 4 points while your offense is among the best in the country, something isnt right on the opposite side of the ball. I think Cyclone fans should be able to appreciate what an above average DC can do after what we saw from Wally this year
