Tom Crean
if you have Big 10 Network, check out coach Crean and Indiana. Just watch Crean coach - he is so dynamic, and his players echo that. IU was essentially in death penalty land 2 years ago when they had NO returning players from the Sampson fiasco. In 1.5 seasons, Crean has a competitive team and his players play HARD.
Anyway, it is amazing the different moods I find myself in while watching my 2 alma maters play. Even when IU loses, I generally find myself respecting the effort and enjoying watching them. Watching ISU this year, I find myself annoyed at the effort, ****** off at the poor execution, and usually feel sick to my stomach by the end of the game (win or lose).

I've always liked Crean. He reminds me a lot of Fennelly actually.
Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?

Re: Tom Crean
Players generally echo their coach. Another good example is Frank Martin at K-State. GMac is not an intense coach, and it shows in our players.

Re: Tom Crean
Mac is up and yelling, but it's just instructions that the players probably already know or should know. Anybody who has ever worked for a micro-managing boss knows what this does for your attitude...

Re: Tom Crean
If you want to compare IU and ISU turnarounds take into consideration Crean is a coach we could probably never land here and IU has a TON more prestige and tradition with their BB program where you can recruit top notch talent. He's done a helluva job there so far considering the mess he took over but to say we could have that kind of turnaround here is probably wishful thinking.

Re: Tom Crean
Attitude and heart start with the coach. Players amplify that. McD just looks content to be a pleasant guy, try to win, and be complacent when it doesn't happen.
Until McD tosses his jacket like Floyd, pumps a fist like Johnny, or erupts like Eustachy, I am not going pay much attention to this team. Somebody PM me when one of those above things starts happening.
Oh, and somebody else needs to reming Greg that nice guys finish last, especially in major college athletics at the moment.
All Greg needs to do is watch our football coach Rhoads for a bit. Now that guy gets it, which means his players get it. When everybody buys into the system, and plays as a team, the output is greater than the sum of its parts.

Great minds and all that, apparently we were typing at the same time.

Re: Tom Crean
on the way to the locker room at halftime, Crean walked over to the student section and started trying to pump them up even more. They were already loud, but he did it anyway. think of how much that endears him to the student fan base!

I've heard some nit-picking over McDermott but this might be the dumbest...HOW DARE OUR COACH YELL INSTRUCTIONS DURING A GAME?!?!

If you have heard McD coach, his sideline motivation instructions are so simplistic they are pretty much redundant. And there is no fire behind them and the just sound silly, even to the casual fan.
Also, I tend to trust Cybsball20 and his perspective on team sports. No I am not a fanboi of his, it just seems that he knows what he is talking about concerning sports and motivation.

Re: Tom Crean
Mac was far from pleasant today. He got in a few players faces at different timeouts.
Unfortunately, Brackins responded exactly 0. They need to refinish the floor in a few places from Mac stomping in anger too. -

So I'll ask again, what do you think he should be yelling if it's not instructions? I hate to break it to you but there's not a lot of other options for a coach to be yelling to his team during the game...

Re: Tom Crean
I've seen Tom Crean at a coaches clinic before and there is not a more dynamic and likeable guy in all of college basketball. This guys passion for the game just bursts out of him. He was talking a hundred miles an hour and explaining a drill they do about defense and how hustle was the main ingredient for his team, and he was just a really enjoyable guy to watch coach...Indiana is lucky to have him.

I'm also going to say, cybsball20 probably knows more than about anybody on here when it comes to baseball, but that doesn't mean crap when it comes to basketball. It's pretty much apples and oranges in motivation, intensity, etc...I know he sometimes THINKS he is an expert on all athletics because of his connection to professional baseball, but thinking and being are 2 different things...so personally I wouldn't give his opinion any more credence than anybody else's when it comes to what a basketball coach should be yelling to his players
