I think you can be a hard *** if the players know you are sincere, and that you have their backs too.
Damn it you guys are being paid too much money to perform like this!
Different coaches have different motivational styles. The trick is to recruit players that repsond to your style. Frank is an alpha male and motivates by being hard on his players. I saw a recent interview with one of his players and he indicated that they were all afraid to make eye contact with Frank when he is mad. You don't need to be a hard case to be a good coach. Look at Rick Barnes or Jim Boheim.
Frank Martin hasn't done anything wrong. Delonte Hill is one of (if not the) highest paid assistants in the country because he was the Head Man as far as AAU in DC is concerned. He stayed with Martin when Huggins went to WVU. He is the reason they have gotten so much talent there so fast, Martin has just been an expert at motivating high caliber pampered athletes. Something McDermott cannot do.
"Clemente, what the hell is happening. You are only shooting 60 per cent tonight and you are running like a girl. Beardman, get some rebounds. Pullen, I want some real hustle for a change. You run like you are going to the bathroom. Hit some free throws for gods sake if you cannot make a bucket. Kelly, come on man you can get more bounds. You are a sloth. You make a catepillar look good. Judge, why are fouling all the time. Finesse, man. Get those hands in the right places. Pull those trunks before you rebound. Colon. Just pathetic. You shoot free throws like a baby. Okay munchkins, let's get out there and show the people why they hired frank martin. Go get 'em."
Conspiculously absent from this thread are all of those who were ripping on Martin and screaming from the rooftops that KSU would be nothing after Walker and Beasley left. The same people that said KSU would regret hiring Martin while ISU was actually doing it "the right way". Meanwhile, we have regressed to levels not seen at ISU in a quarter of a century and KSU has a good chance of making the Final 4. Wow.
I mentioned this in another thread, but I think the locker room speech was staged. After what we've seen and heard from Frank Martin this year, there's no way he goes in at half time and tells his team they are playing "silly".
