John Feinstein vs. the NCAA...

About tournament expansion, IMO a horrible, horrible idea, although I've come to the reality that it will happen.

I like the part at the bottom of the link where the author calls the NCAA out on its true motives by using their own words against them.

John Feinstein is one of my favorite authors. Unfortunately, exchanging like ths, even where Feinstein is totally in the right, aren't going to prevent the NCAA from expanding the tournament.

At 64, it was just about perfect, with the only problem being the ridiculous play in game. For some reason, the NCAA has decided to add 15 more play in games.

The most interesting point he makes is this:

"I can guarantee the NCAA is privately thrilled that the best Feinstein and Co. can muster is a bunch of tired old pieties about school."

It's funny how extra time off from school doesn't matter a lick when it comes to the NCAA basketball post-season, but for football? "No, we can't have a playoff system because the players will miss too much class time."

Even that isn't true, as any playoff would take place on the weekend, over winter break. If the NCAA would just come out and say it's a cash grab, people would have more respect for it.

Exactly. The missed class argument in football is BS, yet the NCAA continues to use it. But, here it actually holds water, and they won't even talk about it.
