I don't hate Duke, I just like it when they get beat by an underdog, which is almost everybody they play.
There is no doubt from the Coach K AMEX commercials to ESPN/Dickie V slobbering over everything Duke does that they have a significant, inherent, now institutionalized, uncompetitive advantage over 99% of other D1 schools. What is wrong with being pleased when Goliath gets punked by David?
I don't hate Duke but, man, there must not be a good barber in Durham near campus because a lot of those kids have really bad haircuts.
I hate Duke and here is why....
1. Their reputation as an elite academic institution. They might be great but not when it comes to their basketball players. They grease those kids in the door with lowered academic standards and then when those kids get there it gets even better. They take academic courses that are a joke. Was it Boozer and Jason Williams they found taking a class called History of ACC Basketball? Tough... very tough. This was all looked into by ESPN on Outside the Lines a few years back. Coach K's response.... ESPN's story was all lies. Sure thing coach...
2. They sell their kids and program as model citizens and great student athletes. False. There have been many stories written about the low academic standards of the Duke basketball program and how many of their recruits have had serious run-ins with the law. There are many examples of this without taking much effort to look into it. To think we give the Iowa football team so much grief for their previous criminal activities..... Duke is the hardwood version of the Hawks.
3. The NCAA Selection Committee. Without question Duke gets the easiest draws. Look at their draw this year... They were regarded as the lowest of the #1 seeds yet got by far the easiest draw. Villanova was the weakest #2 and were playing terrible going into the tournament. Baylor was the weakest #3 seed. Purdue was the weakest #4 seed without their star player. What a joke. Not sure why the NCAA loves Duke so much but they always get the easy draws.
4. Officiating. Duke gets the calls.... always.
5. Dick Vitale. There has never been another school that has gotten so much love from a member of the media as Duke does from Dick Vitale. It is pathetic. Should an NCAA institution have a member of the media who by all means should be impartial as their basketball programs mouth piece? I am sure old Dick was keeping his wife up last night as he stroked it to One Shining Moment and his autographed photo of Coach K.
Whinny players. That's the main reason. It seems like Coach K and his players have a sense of entitlement about them that just makes me mad. Guys like Reddick, Paulus and Singler have ruined Duke basketball for me. Plus the flopping...ridiculous.
This sounds strange, but I also hate the "rah-rah" attitude about them. They act like a woman's basketball team. I hate the floor slapping, and the *** slapping, and everyone running out on the floor every time out, and the guys on the bench, it's completley overkill. I'm all about team unity--but it seems so forced and ridiculous with Duke.
I also don't like the Cameron Crazies. It's nothing more than a bunch of nerds, upset about not being able to stand in the front of their high school student sections, who have banded together to nerd out something that should be great.
And Dukie-V...
I don't like Duke for a few reasons:
The flopping is just bad basketball to me and I hate to watch it.
Vitale contributes a lot to it.
Finally, I hate the perception of Coach K. His "integrity" is no better than anybody else's, and if you don't believe me, ask Jon Miller.
Until about a year ago, I had several family members in Chapel Hill and grew up loving the Tar Heels. Would go to UNC sporting events, including Duke-UNC games, when we went out to visit 4-5 times a year. Went to more UNC events than ISU events until I came to school here.
Love UNC, hate Duke. (I'm now prepared to be eternally shunned for saying this)
Edit: I'll add that Coach K is a tremendous coach, but I can't stand the antics of the team and expecting every single call to go their way. And the flopping.
Because of Dickey DOOK Vitale and because the refs and announcers love every move they make. Dook gets officiating calls going their way all the time...
Dick Vitale definitely doesn't help anything either. If I'm watching games that he's calling, I mute the TV.
