Re: Beginning of the end?
All that matters to me is the Big 12 will still exist, possibly minus Nebraska and Missouri, with ISU in it. If those teams leave the Big 12 will fill those spots with schools that want to jump into a more prestigous conference.
Some conference reshuffling with the top football schools grouping into bigger conferences, could eventually end the dumb BCS system and get us a playoff.
As far as the NCAA going away, they only reason they exist is b/c the universities wanted a governing body to set rules to keep things fair. If the schools didn't want them around, they would get pushed to the side.

I agree. The quieter it is from the athletic dept. and Pollard, usually means exciting things are going on behind the scenes. I think Iowa State's chances of joining the Big 11 are as good as Fred Hoiberg's chances were of becoming the basketball coach 3 weeks ago. Not good. But it did happen. Funny how things work out.

But here's my original thought...As for CFB alignment being the hottest sports topic going...laterly, I've been trying to catch the local nightly TV sports casts across several channels, hoping to hear something about the Big 12 expansion/contraction/Pac-10 alliance (DFW is Big 12 country after all). I haven't heard one thing, and I've been checking for a couple of weeks. The ESPN radio affiliate did about 5 minutes on MU leaving the Big 12 yesterday...it amounted to "No big loss if MU leaves, and just add TCU because they are good in FB", which indicates how much those guys have actually studied what this expansion business is all about, and what teams would fit in the Big 12.
Right now, this Big Ten expansion isn't a huge national story. If things start to move and major realignment takes place, it may become a huge story. The reason it gets so much play on CF is because the major sports seasons are over.

Re: Beginning of the end?
It's nice to think JP is on top of this and exciting things are going to happen, but I don't know what that's based on. JP is a fairly new first time a.d and I doubt he has much of a rep that would influence the powers that be in the Big 10. He does have the Wisconsin connection, but I don't know if he was highly thought of there or not. I doubt he's a favorite of the Iowa crowd. I suppose I could be sold on a move to the Big 10, but I'm not crazy about it as I think it would badly hurt our recruiting in the Texas/Oklahoma area. It could open things up in the Illinois/Ohio area, but with a lot of teams to compete with that have plenty of recruiting history in the area.

What did it miss? Your point or mine? It made the points i wanted to make. What will not miss, but be missed, is the Big 12 north. Unless JP has another trick up his sleeve.

Im not worried at all, just saying we have a lot to lose if we are left behind. Im sure a few teams will leave, and we will replace them with others. But everyone on here is worried about a non conference schedule that includes UTAH.. now what if we play TCU, and UTah every year on top of the other Big 12 south schools... that would be better?

Re: Beginning of the end?
I think part of what is special with college sports is that there are so many teams and unknowns about who is going to be good. If the big sports schools get their wish to build a few super conferences, will it really be an attractive product in the future. To me that would make college football look like AAA baseball, won't most people just watch the real pros in the NFL. They have already ruined New Year's Day, this would be another step in grabbing the money while ruining the product.

Re: Beginning of the end?
It's clearly not the end of anything. Think about improving the Big 12 with Florida Schools . Think what that would do for our recruiting. Get Miami and Florida State to join would be preferable to keeping Nebbie and Missouri.

i agree with this to a point... except for the fans in states with no NFL teams, and a team in a "super conference" Hawk fans, Nebraska, Oklahoma, etc... any Texas school will still have support because its Texas... but it will diminish lots of schools.

Re: Beginning of the end?
If 4 Super Conferences end up being formed out of this it will be bad for college sports in general. But it will be good for those 64 teams and their revenue. Those top teams and conferences in control (right now the Big 10 seems to want to take the lead in this) don't care about college sports as a whole. They only care about the bottom line and stuffing more of it into their pocket.

Re: Beginning of the end?
Enough.
I propose Beebe to send out certified emails tonight inviting Iowa, Illinois, Northwestern, and Minnesota to join the new Big 16 aka Big 12 on Roids.
That will give Deace more fodder to carve up.
The best defense is a good offense.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -
