Re: Jon Miller
I like their show a lot but maybe it is because they are closer to my age (okay I'm a bit younger but close enough to get their references). I like the topics they talk about minus Lost, and they rarely take callers (bonus!) I listen every single morning.
I don't care that Miller is a Hawk fan. To each their own. I don't care that my political views differ from Deace. I would much rather listen to two people who know who they are and can back up their opinions.
To me this is a sharp contrast to another show on the same network thats format seems to be "okay, today I'll argue for this and you argue against it and to prove my point I will just keep repeating myself at a higher and higher volume.... and then we will talk to Tim McClellend or some yuts from out east that can catch us up on the Boston scene and then we will talk about what a poop Jamie Pollard is."
Some people tend to lose site of the fact that this a a radio show. It is for entertainment purposes only.

I ran into Sean "tickle my belly " Keeler and he heard that Coe and Graceland are in talks with the big 11...according to his source from 62&even.com. WOW!!! I asked him about the reactions to his blog and he said that he literally cried himself to sleep from all of the scrutiny and harsh comments. He is going to job shadow the sports director at the Ottumwa courier to pick up some pointers.have a good Friday.

they may not be what you call in the reporting buisness, but they are spot on more times than not. they are by far the best show going, great info, and they are passionate about local sports... Id be giddy too if i was a Big 10 fan... people always hate when the news isnt about them. BIG 10 expansion talk is fantastic, i love the conversation... gets us talking football everyday in MAY... i love it.
Plus they brought in some new numbers on how much MORE money the Big 10 will make... was pretty freakn amazing.

Re: Jon Miller
John does drive me crazy somedays, for that matter so does Steve. But for me ultimately that is what makes good radio and I think John is does a great job and is pretty darn sharp when it comes to sports knowledge. One thing I don't think John realizes about adding NEB and Mizzou is the impact it will have on Iowas recruiting. It will be a huge blow to Iowa when Nebby and Mizzou are able to tap into the Chicago market. It may take a couple years but I believe this will be a huge negative for the Hawks recruiting wise. Not to mention the increased competition on the football field which I believe Nebby and Mizzou will most likely dominate the Hawks.

When the big 10 expands they will go to divisions. Iowa will not be in the same division as Michigan and Ohio State. That in itself is a big win. At worst they'll have to compete against Nebraska and Notre Dame so they'd be in basically the same position they are now. (compete every few years, rebuild a few years, then compete, etc.)
I really don't understand the less wins argument. Just because the conference is expanding doesn't mean they'll play more conference games (or harder conference games for that matter) It's not like the Big 10 is dropping Indiana, Purdue, Minnesota for ND, Texas, and USC. Won't the Big 10 have some type of cross division scheduling each year like the Big 12 does? So, Iowa will play ND, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Mizzou every year and probably get set up to play Penn St one year, Michigan the next, then Ohio State the year after that. That's a pretty tough conference schedule right there.

I don't have cable now, and the only thing I miss about it is the sports. Maybe cable is such a household thing now that it would be hard to go away. But cell phones basically crippled companies like AT&T that stayed invested in landlines. This. I think that a lot of people, M&D included are a little short-sighted here. TV and cable is not going to continue in this way forever. We're going to be looking at EVERY game everywhere being televised, mostly on a subscription basis. TVs will be connected to the internet and the difference between a satellite channel and an internet channel will be negligible. ISP's like Qwest are going to start offering their own programming. And that will all lead to a la carte programming. We won't have the situation where 10% of a state's population forces the other 90% to pay for the BTN even if they don't want it. On top of that, advertising revenue will drop because people will just edit out the commercials via tivo or similar devices...in fact, why wouldn't those devices just automatically edit out commercials while they record?
I think that down the line, every person is going to pick the channels they subscribe to and pay $X a month. There will be no such thing as "basic cable", there will be packages of channels that they bunch together that you can get for a discount...or just pick out a couple singles and buy them seperately. The Big 10 will still have positioned themselves well because they have high enrollment universities in high population areas, but schools like Maryland and Rutgers aren't going to help them as much because they won't get all the benefit of the basic cable dollars...they'll just get paid by the fans who care. And this just in: ISU outdrew the mighty Maryland in FB attendance last year with all their surrounding population and they outdrew Rutgers in 2008 (but were outdrew by a measley 3k in 2009). What I'm saying is, if cable goes a la carte, these schools aren't exactly the boon that the Big 11 is hoping for. For as populated as those areas are, the people just don't care about those schools.

That trade off doesn't look so bad does it?
It's likely that Iowa will be in a Division that looks something like this:
Iowa
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Missouri
Nebraska
Illinois
PSU(or ND if they join)
Northwestern
How is that so much harder than this current schedule
PSU
Michigan
Wisconsin
MSU
Indiana
Northwestern
Ohio State
Minnesota

Actually, the new IS about us. I really don't know how you can "love it" unless you are a hok fan because they are one step closer to getting what they've always wanted...ISU as a mid-major type program.

That's a pretty tough conference schedule right there. With 16 teams scheduling is probably going to be a nightmare. I have no idea how it would work. I put what I thought the "west" division would look like in my previous post. That leaves one game a year (8 total conference games) for a game from the other side of the conference. So yes, there will be years Iowa will play a OSU, Mich, PSU (as I'd have ND in the West division in your scenario) but there will also be years where they play Indiana, Rutgers, etc.

Re: Jon Miller
Here is my question then. If Maryland and Rutgers add so much, why even bother with Nebraska? If you want to go to 16 just start adding MO, Rutgers, Maryland, ND and another Big East school. What does Nebraska offer that the B10 really cares about? I would think the B10 could give two s***s about Nebraska football history and they don't bring any TV's. I don't know, I just have a feeling the Nebraska talk is more Osborne making a fuss and the B10 trying to gain leverage over ND than anything real.
Maybe they need Neb to balance it geographically but I just can't imagine they care about geography that much. MO going to the Big 10 makes sense, but I just think Neb is a lot bigger stretch.

I thought it was a reasonable question. I am unquestionably a big 10 homer but if you can show me how this means Iowa will have fewer wins every year I'll be glad to admit I'm wrong. I've been wrong once before so it's possible.

I do get a kick out of Jon thinking that Iowa has all of this pull in the Big 10. I also enjoy when he says that people need to realize this isn't about sports, its about money/tv audience (which is true) and then beats the Hawkeye drum about being good in football like that somehow gives them leverage. Even though Iowa is a small market and has a small audience/tv viewers. Iowa is in a similar position as Iowa State...they are just along for the ride. That is interesting because I have never said Iowa has ANY pull in any of this an take heat on my own board or saying it. I have said we are fortunate because we were a part of it early on and that we r the smallest state with the least to offer the BTN
Buy that doesn't make for interesting reading on CF ;-)
