Mountain West to invite Boise St.?
Apparently, if that's going to happen, it's going to happen like now: The Mountain West Conference presidents meet next month, and there’s at least a decent chance that they will formally invite BSU — if not immediately after the gathering, then before July 1.
Here’s why: if the MWC wants Boise State’s performance in the 2008-10 seasons to be included in the formula that determines whether the MWC receives an automatic BCS bid for the next cycle of games — and it sure as heck does — then the Broncos must be a member of the MWC in 2011. I'm sure there are very complicated calculations going on in the Mountain West Fortress of Solitude right now. Can they possibly end with any decision other than "duh, invite Boise"?
I'd suggest that the MWC take a hard look at adding Fresno State, too, bringing them to an even ten and beefing their football presence up to the point where it's almost impossible to justify a Big East a****id without a corresponding Mountain West one. If they want to get all cackling and evil about things, they could ask Wyoming and possibly Colorado State to hike back to the WAC. That would bring their conference strength of schedule up even further without hurting the basketball side of things—the reason UNLV and San Diego State are safe.
The new conference would be guaranteed a BCS bid for the single year of its existence, at which point the Pac 10 and Big 12 will tear it limb from limb and keep the shiny bits to themselves. But 2011 will be cool

Re: Mountain West to invite Boise St.?
Mountain West currently has 9 - Air Force, BYU, Colorado St, New Mexico, San Diego St, TCU, UNLV, Utah, Wyoming.
Adding Boise St would get them to 10. Personally, I wouldn't stop with Boise St, or with Fresno St as you suggest. I would also add Nevada and get it to 12.

If you're Boise St would you really want this? You've already proven that you can get to BCS games. Sure the MWC is tougher than the WAC, but if you lose 1 game either way your done. Why make it harder for yourself?

Playing in a legitimate conference will pave the way.

Personally I would like to see it just to see them player better competition every year. But I'm just not sure if Boise St would want to join that quickly. Especially with the unknown of what is going to happen with all the conference expansion stuff. If I were Boise I would hold off on joining the MWC until everything plays out.

BSU, Utah, BYU, TCU in one conference would give it some respect and deserves a national title shot. Those teams have had some terrific seasons in the last decade.
It was nice seeing Utah shut up Bama in the Sugar Bowl 2 years ago.

Except it didn't because everyone just went into "we had nothing to play for because we weren't in the BCS Championship game" mode...
However, I do agree - it was nice seeing them get humbled.

Could the MWC be positioning itself to pick up the pieces if the Big 12 starts to break up?

However, I do agree - it was nice seeing them get humbled. I don't buy that. After Utah started rolling them, if they were that much better, they would have gotten themselves back in it. DO you think they didn't care if they lost to Utah? Especially got hammered. If this happens, you have TCU, BSU, Utah and BYU in the same conference. That is legit.

By adding Boise State to the conference they very well may become a BCS conference, and at that point they are a BCS undefeated team if they win out.

I agree it's an absolutely ridiculous argument - How is it Utah's fault that Alabama decided not to show up to play? But then you have those that, instead of blaming Alabama for the loss, want to discredit Utah's win.
Alabama might not have been on top of their game that day, but it doesn't change the fact that Utah absolutely crushed them that day. With the way Utah dominated that game I don't know how anyone can justifiably make excuses for Alabama instead of giving all the credit in the world to Utah.

The MWC is well on their way to being an auto-qualifier without Boise St so this would only strengthen that. Boise St has to go undefeated to even sniff a BCS bowl as of now. If they join the MWC it's a good possibility that they'd then only have to win the conference to get into a BCS bowl.

We're on the same page here - I personally refuse to discredit Utah's dominance in that game by using the excuse of "well, Alabama didn't show up to play," regardless of whether they did or not. I'm more mocking those that do use this tactic.

However, I do agree - it was nice seeing them get humbled. Alabama did have something to play, ie not being punked by a non-BCS team.
