MWC NOT expanding

just saw it scroll on the bottom of ESPN that the MWC commish said they will not expand (offer Boise St.)..today anyway.

From everything I've read/heard they are just holding off for the near term. They were poised to offer Boise St. but they think the possibility of a Big 12 breakup might allow them to go after Colorado, KU and K-State instead.

yep thats kind of what i was getting out of it. They werent going to be the first ones expanding and wanted to wait and see what other conferences ended up doing. But even if they added Boise St. now they could still add CU etc.. when/if the Big 12 breaks up.

"Expansion talks could resume in days, weeks or possible never, Thompson said.

The commissioner did say that Boise State was one of the teams the conference has been looking at including others.

"Everything is still on the table," Thompson said."

wow - if I was a Boise State fan, I'd be ticked about this.

I thought that they were a done deal.

not at this time means today or an hour ago... they will expand if everyone else does.

I think Boise State is going to be included in the MWC and it will happen by the end of the day, or the week at the latest. The reason why is because the MWC is ending a 4 year evaluation period to which they will get AQ status albeit temporary. Adding Boise State by July 1 will grandfather in Boise States results. Read the quote from CBSSPORTSLINE.com

It's complicated, sure, but Boise State is willing to take a shot. While the nine-team Mountain West is not a BCS conference with an automatic berth to one of the four major bowls (Orange, Rose, Fiesta, Sugar), it could get there -- with Boise's help. The MWC is nearing at least temporary qualification for BCS status because of its performance over a four-year evaluation by the BCS commissioners. In a strange twist, Boise's performance since 2008 -- currently standing at 26-1 -- would be grandfathered into the Mountain West's evaluation if it joins.
And Boise must join by July 1 in order to begin playing by 2011, the end of the latest evaluation period. Talk about a symbiotic relationship. The Mountain West would get that BCS designation only temporarily for 2012 and 2013, but there are those who believe enough momentum has been created that the Mountain West could permanently become a seventh BCS conference.

I think the MWC realizes that (1) BSU really isn't that great of a catch and (2) ISU, KSU, KU, Baylor and maybe even Mizzou/kNU might be available.

Smart move on their part.

They were probably expecting the Pac 10 to make their move this weekend, as so many rumors/reports suggested. Since that didn't happen (yet), this only makes sense.

Nothing is settled yet in the Big 10, Big 12 or Pac 10. Why commit yourself now?
