Uta coach thinks there will be super conference within 10 years
It's been a little over a week since Utah accepted an invitation to move from the Mountain West to the Pac-10 and, while all's quiet on the expansion front, the Utes' head coach doesn't see it staying that way for long.
Speaking at the Associated Press Sports Editors convention in Salt Lake City, Kyle Whittingham intimates that it would be a mistake to think conference upheaval is done and over with, that the era of the super conferences will not happen at some point in the not-too-distant future.
"This is just phase one of conference expansion," Whittingham said. "I don't see it going anywhere other than that direction. There will be super conferences not inside three years and not outside 10 years."
It seems likely that the conference that will be first to pull the trigger on the super conference -- after the Pac-10 failed -- is the Big Ten, although it remains to be seen whether that will be their ultimate destiny as another report surfaced this past week saying that the league's presidents have no appetite to go above 12 teams. What doesn't remain to be seen is Whittingham's utter disdain for the BcS.
