Big 10 Divisions

Iowa, Big 10 Mashup: Iowa to the East? | Hawkeye Nation

Rumor that Iowa will be placed in the same division as OSU and PSU with Michigan, Nebraska, and Wisky in the other division.

Something like this...

Nebraska
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Michigan State

Ohio State
Penn State
Iowa
Indiana
Purdue
Northwestern

Minnesota would be Iowa's protected rival they would play every year. Iowa would lose yearly games against Wisky and Nebraska as well as being placed in a division that will be near impossible to win.

I find this hilarious.

How is that division any more impossible than a division with UM, Nebby, Wisconsin, and MSU?

I don't see this happening but who knows. This would not be a good thing for Iowa though, that's for sure.

Screw the Big 10, 11, 12.

The only thing I give a rats *** about is the Iowa State Cyclones and the true Big 12.

I would not want to be in the same division as Ohio St. It's like being in the same division as Texas. They will win that division the vast majority. At least in the West division, it'll be up for grabs between 3 or so teams every year.

To be real honest, Iowa would be in a weak division. Depending on who the teams play from the other division, Iowa could lose to Ohio St and still win that division.

If I'm Iowa, I take this in a heartbeat.

A Big Ten championship goes through Ohio State no matter what. If you don't play them in your division you will see them in the Big Ten Championship game. Michigan will be back and be tough again some day.

If this is true, I find it funny that geography has nothing to do with their east vs. west divisions.

Iowa in the East with Michigan and MSU in the West? That's ridiculous. It'd be like if the Big 12 had wanted to keep Texas and Texas A&M and put A&M in the North with ISU or Mizzou in the South.

It's actually not a bad deal for Iowa. They own PSU and their protected rival they would play every year is a joke. If they can figure out how to beat Northwestern they could finish second to OSU every other year and always go to a good bowl game in Florida

Don't take my divisions too seriously. I just threw them together based off what is rumored, OSU & Mich separate and Iowa & Wisky separate. I guess Purdue & Indiana separate is rumored too.

Either way, Iowa is going to lose out on 1 rival.

I've argued recently that anything but a natural east-west split in the Big Ten-Twelve is shortsighted and isn't likely to solve (most) power-balance problems.

Traditionalists want U-M & Ohio State in separate divisions because it would be a shame if they could never meet in the title game. No other conference alignment involving teams that have challenged for or won the league title in the last decade or so is part of the discussion (Wisconsin, Iowa, Purdue, Penn State — and throw in the X-factor of Nebraska's presence) . If some of that were considered, it might be worth developing a crazy-*** divisional structure.

PLUS: One of the most common arguments from BCS proponents (and probably the most compelling support for the system) is that the regular season matters. Every game can be a "playoff." But if you split OSU and Michigan, that regular season rivalry would rarely have significant impact in itself.

Splitting OSU and Michigan is a massive mistake. Did the Big 10 learn nothing from OU-NU?

Typical Big 10 logic.

Iowa is getting a raw deal if they aren't in the same division as their neighbors Neb, Minn, and Wisc.

They could divide it alphabetically and it would work out about as well as anything else. It would preserve most rivalries and each school could secure an out of divsion opponent each year i.e Iowa vs Nebraska or Ohio St vs Michigan.
