Good Luck Phil and I hope you and the "Fightin' Solich's" have a great year So basically what you're saying is that the less-talented QB with the lesser arm and lesser decision-making abilities should start ahead of the guy we have now? You sure your personal relationship with the guy isn't clouding your judgment on this? I mean, the guy isn't starting at Ohio - what makes you think he'd be starting here? IMHO -If you don't have a clear cut starter QB the last week of August you don't have a strong QB. Using a two QB "system" is a cop out for a coach and it means one one has the stones to step up and take the job. (Yeah , I could be talking about Nebbie as well.)

Good Luck Phil and I hope you and the "Fightin' Solich's" have a great year Arnaud was a better passer by far, and they were on pretty even field when it came to running. Bates transfered because Arnaud was a better QB.

Not to defend Ohio or Bates, but Boo Jackson had a phenomenal 2008 campaign coming out of a JUCO. He was injured before the season last year and received a red shirt.

Time will tell, I think Bates will get his shots at Ohio to prove that he is a good QB.
Let's hope AA lights it up this year and puts this discussion to bed.

Arnaud beat out Bates. Plain and simple. At Iowa in 2008, I thought that Bates was actually put in the best position to have success and he didn't really deliver. Bates had some talent but reacted in the wrong way when things didn't get decided in his favor. Bates was given plenty of opportunities if he had just played better.

My vote was with Bates as well. I believe Bate's athleticism gave us the best chance to win. AA may have been an all-around better QB but I liked Bate's upside. A team like ISU is better served with a Michael Vick rather than a Sam Bradford.
My knock against AA then was his accuracy was overrated. His completion % wasn't bad but he was not putting the ball on the money giving his receivers for YAC's. I also appreciate his running but it's not consistent. I am hopeful it is more sgressive this year.
I hope AA makes me eat my words but I have been disappointed with his progression as a three year starter. I do give him some slack though, having the coaching turnover did not help.
I really did not want to go here. It's all in the past. Bates lost my support when he transferred mid-season. I wish AA the very best this season. I believe we have an opportunity to beat every team in the North if he can reach the potential I think of for a four year starter.

Re: Philip Bates Update...in case anyone's interested
Bates seems like a good kid who made a poor decision to leave when he did. He would have gotten plenty of playing time that year as well since AA got dinged up.
Boo Jackson is actually a pretty darn good QB. Remember he almost led Ohio to a win over Ohio State two years back. Being tied with him at QB isn't as bad as most make it out to be here.

Philip, Phil. Doesn't matter to me. I just call him 'Master'. :)

Re: Philip Bates Update...in case anyone's interested
Phil was not the better QB at the time, it was that simple. Great athelete, but was not the better QB. Even so, if he wouldn't have bailed, he would have had a shot to claim the spot and still be the starter. Everyone forgets AA got hurt the very next week at Baylor and then had to play the next week against Nebraska at home when he shouldn't have been on the field. He couldn't throw the ball more than 15 or 20 yards against Nebraska, but everyone blamed the OC we had at the time for not calling any downfield plays. Bates should have been starting/playing in those games. Bates would have had his chance no question, and he would have had another chance last year when AA got hurt, but he took the easy way out, and now he has to battle for playing time at Ohio anyway.
I wish him well, but he would have had plenty of chances here to play QB due to AA injuries.

You may be a cunning linguist, but I am a master debater.

I wish him luck, but I don't have any illusion that he was the better QB.
