Re: Ok, I can't hold this in any longer, have to share...
My wife and I graduated from ISU, proposed at Homecoming, married in Ames, reception in the Great Hall. One of my relatives <sigh> got likkered up at the reception and yelled "Go Hawkeyes."
Until this post, I thought that was the epitome of d-baggery. This is on an altogether different scale.
I hope that someone took that person aside afterwards and told her how inappropriate it was.
I, too, am sorry for your loss.

You have to learn when to joke about that stuff and when not. I feel so sorry about your loss and that someone is that stupid.
My wife's cousin found out last year that he was picked to be a student manager for the Iowa football team. His graduation party was decked out black and gold and he was extremely excited about an amazing opportunity. I held my tongue and congratulated because I felt the situation was much bigger than a rivalry.

Sorry for your loss also.
As a Hawk fan I would have called her out afterward and told her how inappropriate that was. I don't really care what school you like, in that situation it is all about honoring the person who passed.
* and not to hijack a thread but if you think 90% of Hawk fans would have done that you are right on par with the sad old lady in the story.

That is deplorable.
I'm a pretty outspoken person with a big sense of humor and sometimes I've been known to offend people. But I seriously tried to put myself in that woman's shoes and ask myself if I would ever do anything like that. It is unthinkable. I hope she got punched in the back of the head when she sat down.

Very sorry for your loss. Hope that the ISU Teams win a lot of games and bring you good memories.
Really poor behavior from the woman. Very inappropriate and disrespectful.

I think some people take the "Go Hawks" or "Go Clones" thing too personally rather than the lighthearted joke it's meant to be but this situation certainly isn't the case. Not cool.
As for your situation I don't think a little ribbing would have been out of line. Something like, "Is it your job to bail players out of jail or do they hire someone else to do that?" **disclaimer: this is assuming you've met your wife's cousin before.

I guess I saw the post as a chance to either:
A) give a sincere condolence
B) ridicule this sad old lady
The problem is that to some it is always more important to get their shot at the other team in. So not on par (apologies to cstrunk), but somewhere in the same thought process.

I think the most irritating feature of most Hawk fans is that it's all about them. She obviously felt slighted that the conversation was pro ISU.
I LOL-ed last week when I was reading a thread describing Minnesota's new stadium on one of the Hawk boards. The poster indicated that Minny "stole a lot of ideas from Kinnick" such as "putting seats close to the sidelines". I did not realize that EIU held the patent on that concept.
But hey, they are the center of the NCAA FB universe.

I'm sorry for your loss. Very nice way to remember him. As for that lady, wow just when you think Iowa fans can't be anymore classless.
