Drove by the state gym, wow what a project. Could someone fill me in on what is being planned? Thanks.

I think the building that will be attached to it is going to be an indoor pool with waterslide. I am excited but they have been working on it since the beginning of last school year and it still looks like it isnt even close to being done. I hope they finish before I graduate. “I told you, I don’t care if you’re black or white. I don’t care if you’re rich or poor. I don’t care where you come from, whether it’s Texas, Florida, California, or right here in the state of Iowa, I don’t care about any of that… But what I did care about is moving forward from that day on, that we were one team." -Paul Rhoads -

They are renovating State Gym while also adding on to it to increase the amount of space Rec services has. The addition will include a rec pool, 3 full size bball courts, a weight room, a running track, multi-purpose rooms, as well as better space for the out door rec people.

Supposed to be done before fall classes start.

Man, I'm jealous that they didn't do this while I was still in school.
In reality though, opulent rec facilities are just another part of the arms race between universities, so it was inevitable that we'd jump on that bandwagon.

Interesting fact that I learned a while back ago. Iowa State was one of the first universities to have a rec facility dedicated for students, which was Leid. Since then, a lot of universities have built new buildings and ours started to get dated, it's now our time to update.

As someone who used to work for Rec Services, I know a bit about the project!
The skywalk between State Gym and Beyer is to provide handicap accessibility to State.
The new facility really is necessary, from a student recruiting standpoint and just a functional facility for more people on campus.

Too bad they aren't replacing the parking they took away to build the add-on.
