"both proved to be bad fits".....You said it all their psych.....
In my old age Im beginning to think that the most important thing in hiring a coach is "DOES THE GUY FIT IN AMES IA"...
Clearly chizik and mcdermott did NOT fit in ames ia, and their record proves it.
Both chiz and mcderm were in over their heads in ames and the fanbase is very lucky that auburn and creighton took them off of our hands.
BINGO. I think that question needs to be at or very very near the top of the list of questions Pollard is asking himself as he evaluates prospects.
Chiz clearly wasn't a fit. I'm surprised he didn't leave a freakin PODS canister in his driveway when he got here.
I think McDermott WAS a great fit with Ames, IA. Very likeable, worth ethic, Iowa native blah, blah, blah. However, in the words of my late father (speaking of Ken Trickey I believe) "That guy can't coach worth a DERN." Terrible player relations obviously. I just think he was in WAY over his head for a BCS gig.
Two very different cases, I think. Different kinds of 'fit' clearly. Chiz wasn't a culture fit and McD wasn't a coaching/teaching fit.
From the outside both Chizik and McDermott seemed like great hires at the time. Seriously who though we had a chance to talk with a guy who had Chizik's resume let alone hire the guy? With GMac I remember SI had an article about him and how he was going to be the next big thing in coaching the winter before we hired him. On paper Pollard hit it out of the park but if that's all the counted the Yankees would win the world series every year.
Not that I pay much attention to wrestling but I know a few people that do and they are quite concerned with the direction of the program under Kevin Jackson. Pollard has made some big splashes with some of his hires but some of them have turned out to be big stinkers too and hopefully Jackson doesn't get added to this list as well.
I hope he doesn't either. But, considering this is just the start of his second season, and he lost some talent when Sanderson bailed, especially Cael's little brother, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.
