Usually doesn't go well back home afterward.

A : I am a little disappointed that there isnt a prospect with local ties.
B : Why does this feel like BVD trying to replace Eustachy.

This should be pretty far down the list of considerations for a university president.

I don't think it is, but his insurance business is a small business. A general understanding of small business or private business in general will help with linking in with the business climate.

Wasn't our current president a former professor?

They have all been professors at some time and most have either been provosts or chancellors (sp?) before we hired them as president. I just prefer someone who has had to have the risk of not getting the government to bail you out if you screw up.
I feel it also helps to understand "selling" your business, services, etc.

I must have missed the insurance business part (just glanced through the resume). Both candidates look qualified and I'm not knocking ARS - would love to get back into research myself and wish they were after more engineers in my area.

Anything but a physics professor. Not that I have anything against physicists, but...actually, yes I do. I had Atwood for 221. ANYTHING but the physicist.

You think GG didn't know Ben Allen applied for the UNI job? Ben Allen spoke to GG and was encouraged by GG to go for it. GG felt strongly about Allen's ability to lead and thought UNI would be the perfect place for him to start.
When candidates like these gentleman apply, they have the full support of the president/chancellor of their university, they are not running from something. If you don't believe these guys haven't been thoroughly vetted, you're crazy. The last thing any college president wants to do is present a candidate to a peer institution who is not qualified.

I feel it also helps to understand "selling" your business, services, etc. Yeah, because that never happens in private industry. -
