Re: Should the wrestling program's $'s be shifted to FB and or MBB?
Love how the hate for a sport grows when they have a couple down years. But what sport at Iowa State had an actual shot at winning a national title at in recent years. It hasnt been football...it hasnt been basketball...yes it was wrestling. Getting pretty tired of fellow fair weather cyclone fans on this board. Guess we should of considered shutting down the mens basketball program a couple years ago then too!

You could be right about it. Like I said... It's a few that really sour it for everyone else, and kinda make you root against the sport.

There has never been a good professional avenue for wrestlers other than coaching, but the sport shouldn't die because of that.

It doesnt mean all that much to be 'in contention for a national title' when most of the elites aren't playing.
I'll put the accomplishments of the VB team (2 elite 8s in 4 years), and even the WBB team (elite 8 in 09) up against what wrestling has done the last 10 years.

Re: Should the wrestling program's $'s be shifted to FB and or MBB?
I would guess that the amount of money we could pull from wrestling wouldn't make a difference for MBB of FB.
That said, I really don't give a crap about any of our sports outside of FB and MBB. I will follow the programs if they are winning and making some noise nationally, like VB and WBB in the last few years, but I still don't care about it on the level of the big two. If you told me that gonig forward, we could go to a bowl game and make the NCAA MBB tournament every year for the next 10 years but we wouldn't win a single game in any other sport for that time, I would take that deal in a second.

I don't care one way or another. Sure I want them to do well and represent ISU and win. Other then that... Yipppeee...
I never got into wrestling. I tried, but when you ask questions, or try to follow and you have some rude *** poster on this site complaining about it, really not worth the time. Some wrestling fans are the worse fans you can find. Not trying to lump everyone in. I'm sure someone will get offended and usually that is the person I'm talking about. Can someone give this guy a hug?

Should we cut off funds for wrestling? Probably not. I doubt the budget would be that much that it would have a noticeable effect if switched to MBB\FB anyways. On the other side, I wouldnt say we should be putting big investments into it going forward though (for a dedicated facility or anything like that). As others have said, its a dying sport. It may be fun for some to brag that its something we're good at, but it doesnt mean much when a lot of the elites dont bother with having a program. I don't know how much, but I would guess there will a fairly sizeable investment to convert the current football space into space for the wrestling program. At least that was the plan that Pollard mentioned. Probably not on the order of anything we've spent on BB or FB, but enough to show that wrestling isn't going anywhere at ISU anytime soon.

Guess we should of considered shutting down the mens basketball program a couple years ago then too! Can't speak for others, but for me, it has nothing to do with the program. It's a business decision and nothing else. I'd ask the same question if we'd had great success the last few years.
To me, it's also a more pertinent question for Iowa State given our standing in athletic budgets compared to other B12 schools. It's shifting money to a more profitable and impactful program. $800,000 per year is $800,000 per year. If we're OSU and we have a Pickens writing checks, this isn't a consideration.

Without it, why should we not end Volleyball? I am sure that before CJL got here you know how good our team was considering how big a fan you are? I will give you a hint. We were one of the worst programs in the NCAA.
So yeah, lets kill the most historically successful program at ISU. Now I know why hawk fans ride ISU fans so hard. Most deserve it.

Re: Should the wrestling program's $'s be shifted to FB and or MBB?
If it is a business decision, I bet there is a lot of student activities that we could get rid of that make no difference to the average fan. All the clubs that get any finanicial assistance could be cut, etc. It is not a business decision, it is providing a well rounded academic facility for all students and fans. I could care less about Gymnastics, but I don't want it cut.

Just so we know what we've done prior to last season in wrestling, this season isn't done yet.
