Hockey in Hilton? Ever happened?
Has there ever been a hockey game in Hilton? Just came from a UNO game in Omaha and had a blast. I would love to see some Hilton magic on ice.

Re: Hockey in Hilton? Ever happened?
Yes, I worked on the crew in Hilton when I was in school and recall setting up for hockey. That was pre-flood(s) and all the boards were stored under the stands -- might have lost all that stuff in the flood. But the capability exists.

I don't think there's enough floor space in Hilton to play hockey. If I remember right it's 200' from end to end and a basketball court is 94'. If there is enough space, the sight lines would be awful.

Email JP, say we want DI hockey in Hilton. 1. 2. 3. GO!
“I told you, I don’t care if you’re black or white. I don’t care if you’re rich or poor. I don’t care where you come from, whether it’s Texas, Florida, California, or right here in the state of Iowa, I don’t care about any of that… But what I did care about is moving forward from that day on, that we were one team." -Paul Rhoads -

Part of the deal Johnny made to take the job was no more hockey in Hilton. At least that's the urban legend

Doesn't look even close to fitting.

Yep, I remember going to some hockey games in Hilton back in the day, seems like something they did once or twice a season. Somewhere between 1998-2003 when I was in school. It was a cool atmosphere, though of course the crowd didn't fill up much of Hilton, might have been similar to the Volleyball crowds we have now. I'd love to see them try it again once in awhile if feasible.

Last one I was at was when we played a weekend set with Illinois in 2000 or 2001 in Hilton. It is a tight fit, but it fits. And being above the glass and yet so close made for some spectacular views. I know from 97 to 01 there were at least three weekend sets in there.

I know it's not the same but I worked there when there was an ice show. Early 90s I think.

I think the refrigeration equipment was loss in the flood too. Coach Murdock was at December's Linn County Alumni Assoc meeting, he had some good stories to tell about the ISU Hockey program. He said there was a fund raising drive amongst the Ames merchants to restore Hiltons ice skating equipment. IIRC he said $100k was needed.
In the early 70's, after basketball was over, intramural hockey was played in Hilton and on the weekends there was open skating for a couple of bucks.
