Is this the last VEISHEA?
A 21 year old male dies after falling from 4th floor balcony around 2am this morning. I'm guessing it will be characterized as a VEISHEA related death. He was not an ISU student (that is not surprising).
I hope VEISHEA continues, but it's really unfortunate that a wonderful day-time event for the university could end up being discontinued because of the inability to control the night-time portion. President Leath will have a difficult issue to deal with only 3 months into the job.
Re: Is this the last VEISHEA?
Didn't end after a murder when I was there, although I think they cancelled it the next year.
Re: Is this the last VEISHEA?
I really don't think one death will end VEISHEA. There have been other alcohol related deaths on ISU campus or close to it and this death will not be the last.
I think the only thing that would end VEISHEA would be a riot.
Re: Is this the last VEISHEA?
I doubt it. It seems like the non students are usually the ones getting hurt or killed. Sad situation no matter what.
Re: Is this the last VEISHEA?
I've always wondered why it is the non ISU populace in Ames over VEISHEA that always ends up dying or creating horrific problems.
Re: Is this the last VEISHEA?
Alumni love veishea. The university loves money. Alumni give money. Therefore, no veishea, no money from alums.
Basically, if the riot from 2005 didn't kill veishea nothing will
Re: Is this the last VEISHEA?
Sad to say, but students have fallen (some died) off balconies before near ISU and I think one or two of those wasn't even during VEISHEA. I don't have links right now, but I remember reading/hearing about probably 3 or 4 in the last 7 or 8 years. The person could have fallen off a balcony and died three weeks ago during a big birthday party...do we move to ban birthday parties?
The university isn't able to control off-campus drinking at all hours of the night. Outside of the fall, it sounds like things were fairly tame in Ames. A few parties broken up, people cited for possession, arrested for intox, etc., but no big riots or violent activities took place. It's not like the university can ban people who aren't ISU students from attending off-campus parties or events.
Re: Is this the last VEISHEA?
This accident could have happened any weekend. It will not end Veishea. Yes, its sad that somebody died, but alcohol related accidents happen all the time. If you end Veishea bc of this, you might as well shut down the bars and ban alcohol from Ames.
Veishea will continue. I think the only thing that will cancel Veishea is a massive riot causing lots of damage to the city.

Um, no.
The VEISHEA murder outside of Adelante back in 1997 (the spring before I started attending) nearly did kill VEISHEA and initiated the "Dry VEISHEA" that encompassed my entire stay at ISU. The riot nearly a decade ago didn't even bring up the discussion of killing VEISHEA.
Re: Is this the last VEISHEA?
Just another out of towner who can't handle veishea, RIP. But this isn't veishea's fault, there have been many unfortunate cases in ames on normal weekends over the past few years.

The riot had a one year ban in 2005 and I am trying to find the link but I am pretty sure that Geoffrey came out and said if anything like that happened again, there would be no more VEISHEA.

Except that after the riot in '04 the university announced there would not be a VEISHEA in '05.

I agree that horrific accidents occur throughout the year, but I'd be willing to bet that if this wasn't a VEISHEA weekend, this young man would probably be alive today. That's purely speculation on my part, though.
It won't take a massive riot to kill VEISHEA. I'm guessing it will only take one more student death that is tied to VEISHEA.
Re: Is this the last VEISHEA?
This isn't about VEISHEA. If anything comes of this it will be a change to building codes to make all second floor and above balcany handrails higher.

Sadly you are probably right. Lets overreact and increase the costs of construction or ban balconies. I'm sure the over consumption of alcohol had nothing to do with the accident.
