Forbes Top American Colleges
ISU checks in at...#407? Yikes. I realize ISU isn't an ivy league school by any means and that these types of lists are very subjective, but I was still expecting a better ranking that that. The fact that Simpson College is a few spots ahead of us makes me question this list...it would be interesting to see their criteria.
America's Top Colleges
Re:Forbes Top American Colleges
By US news and world report, we are always ranked top 50 for public universities.

The rankings, which are compiled exclusively for Forbes by the
Washington, D.C.-based
Center for College Affordability and Productivity, focus on the things that matter the most to students: quality of teaching, great career prospects, high graduation rates and low-levels of debt. They do not attempt to assess a school’s reputation, nor are they a measure of academic selectivity and we pointedly ignore any metrics that would encourage schools to engage in wasteful spending.
so it would actually make sense we're 407
Re: Forbes Top American Colleges
I would imagine our graduates' astronomical debt played into that low ranking. A few years ago Iowa State grads had the highest average debt of alumni from any college or university in the nation.

i had 3 roomates (we all began in fall 2007) who are still 3 semesters away from graduating...
feels like there's a ton of that going on in Ames
Re: Forbes Top American Colleges
Me too. Second year in and I'm already above the average I think.

Why does Simpson being ahead of ISU make you question the list? Its not based on football teams is it?

bingo, the University is actively trying to curb student debt now by sending out statements that tell you exactly what you owe along with other information. Most other rankings I've seen put ISU in the top 25% of Universities.

No, it's not. I guess I just picked on Simpson because they are a local college that was right ahead of ISU in the rankings. That being said, not that bigger is always better, but I feel ISU has more academics resources and higher quality professors than Simpson because of the large ammount of money we bring in from reseach, etc. Maybe that's biased, since I'm an ISU student, but I'm sure the admission standards for both are similar as well.
Re: Forbes Top American Colleges
ISU was fun and got me a job so it has to be ok. Right........

Well, you should have read all the way to paragraph THREE:

Re: Forbes Top American Colleges
Wow, UNI comes in at #582 on this list, ouch. Anybody know where UI comes in at?
edit: nevermind #269
Re: Forbes Top American Colleges
Forbes has roughly the same amount of credibility as Bleacher Report does.
Any publication that proudly proclaims Kevin McHale (2007 with the Timberwolves)as the best General Manager in all of the Big 4 sports, clearly has their collective head up their butt.

ISU does. But a great deal of those top-notch academic resources are reserved for graduate students, and those faculty members with national reputations spend very little of their time with students, especially undergrads. Smaller schools like Simpson, while not as fancifully equipped as big research universities, do have excellent technology and resources for certain programs, which are almost entirely for use by undergrads. And their top faculty are there primarily to teach, not spend all of their time trying to get published.
