Reader's Digest version: Iowa State is the worst school in the country in terms of graduating its black male student athletes. Only 30% of them graduate at ISU. The national average is just above 49%.
To make matters more interesting, Iowa State ranks #1 in the Big 12 in terms of graduating student athletes in general, at 65% (tied with TCU). This is very comparable with the graduation rate of the student body as a whole at ISU, which is 68%.
Something to keep in mind, this study took place over the 07-10 range.
While its not a good stat for sure, i think since transfers are counted as dropouts, the mcdermott era is going to drag this stat down quite a bit for us.
Also, this line bugs me:
Some would likely argue that affirmative action policies might
not permit such targeted recruitment of one specific racial group. Somehow,
there is considerably less institutional anxiety about potential affirmative action backlash when coaches do all that is necessary to recruit Black men for
participation on revenue-generating sports teams.
It makes it sound like coaches are trying to recruit players just because they are black, not because they have athletic ability. I dont think most coaches would care if their team was 100% white, 100% black, 100% asian, etc if it was filled with solid athletes.
I just think it is odd ISU's numbers are so low. It is not like any program is bring in thugs to be a part of their program. Most of the kids seem like good kids.
I'm guessing its a combination of things:
Taking risks on players who are questionable academically, but good athletically. Necessary to compete.
Transfers that are being counted as dropouts (think of how many we had during the mcdermott era!)
Numbers aren't good in general nationwide for black student athletes. (so, with those above factors included, maybe we arent far off the average nationally, but still not great stats).
Of course you have to look at things from other angles, what other things are in play. How do they correlate compared to other students (of any race) that came in with similar GPAs, SAT scores, etc.
