Big Time Cyclones Set To Run At The Bill Bergan Invitational
I'm an ISU basketball season ticket holder, and we all know that there's a huge game at Hilton Coliseum tomorrow. But did you know that two of Iowa State's all-time best athletes will be gunning for new school records at the Bill Bergan Invitational inside of the Lied Center the same afternoon? NCAA Cross Country Champion Betsy Saina and two-time all-American Edward Kemboi will be running the 3000m (at 3:30 p.m.) and 800m (1:10 p.m.) respectively.
It's hard to compare what Saina and Kemboi do on the track to more popular sports, other than to say that it's just simply badass. In addition to being a multiple-time all-American, Saina has won two NCAA titles as a Cyclone (the indoor 5000m and Cross Country) and is considered by many to be one of the best collegiate distance runners of all time, regardless of gender. Kemboi is a speedy middle distance specialist who has twice braved the ultra-competitive NCAA field in the 800m outdoors. He has twice come away an all-American outdoors, and holds ISU's school records for that distance both indoors and out.
These two are once-in-a-generation, world class athletes who, for several years after they graduate, may spend their summers making six figures on the European professional track circuit. Instead of meets in Norman, Manhattan or Austin, they'll toe the line at Diamond League meets in Paris, London or Rome.
They're both true CyclONE's, and both have proudly worn their ISU uniforms in international competitions. If you're worried about missing the magic at Hilton, there is a big screen television in the lobby at Lied which I have confirmed will be tuned into ABC. See you there!
