Re: Iconic Cyclones, PART TWO (ISU's own Andre the Giant, etc.)

Note that that Chris Taylor match was in Greco-Roman.

I may be mistaken - and it surely magnified the Greco outcome - but I believed his freestyle loss was more controversial:
Chris Taylor: The giant Olympian

"In only the first round of freestyle, Taylor took on two-time gold medalist Aleksandr Medved of Minsk, Ukraine. Medved had beated [sic, bested] Taylor at three other meets, but on this occasion, they fought to a draw. The 231-pound Medved was awarded a controversial decision by referee Umit Demirag of Turkey, who had penalized Taylor for passivity. It was the last time Demirag refereed an Olympic bout, as the ruling body dismissed him from his position, yet allowed the Medved-Taylor decision to stand. Both men won the rest of their bouts, with the Ukrainian taking gold.

"In Greco-Roman, Taylor faced off against Wilfried Dietrich, a West German wrestler whom he had beaten in freestyle. Gagne recalled that Dietrich had a strategy where he kept trying to push Taylor out of the ring. Then Taylor got riled up and rushed Dietrich, who grabbed him up in a bear hug and suplexed the 412-pound monster and "turned him on his back before he hit the mat and that was it. It was a phenomenal move."

Re: Iconic Cyclones, PART TWO (ISU's own Andre the Giant, etc.)

The OSU game they were ranked #2 in the country. We were down by 18 at halftime at home!! In about the last minute and a half we were down by about 8 and Thigpen hit 3 or 4 threes and then fed Hoiberg cutting to the basket for a basket, foul, and ensuing free throw. I've been to a lot of games at Hilton and the moment when Alexander was shooting the free throws is far and away the loudest I've ever heard Hilton. Besides the floor shaking, it was so loud I couldn't even hear myself yelling while he was shooting the 2nd free throw. I used to have the highlights of the end of the game. I'll have to do some serious digging, but I can probably find it given time.

Everyone knows about Big Hair Blaise Bryant. He had the enormous advantage, literally and figuratively, of having Gene Williams and Keith Simms block for him at center and guard. They were 2 future NFL lineman. The line would create huge gaps for him to run through.

FINAL BUMP for the post-game crew.

Does anyone have any more recollections on any of the notes I posted in my original post? Thanks to all who contributed... it is helping me out so much... lets call it market research! If I stumble across more interesting stories, I will do a PART THREE.

Thanks all again
