I believe the Athletic Department used its reserve to compensate and thus we are now pretty much even on our budget but with no surplus. Since they had to pay out some coaches and fix a shady accounting technique (both are one-time expenses) I have no indication that our Athletic Department is in any extremely difficult position. Time to start building back the reserve!
If you want to know more about money in Major College athletic read the book "Airball". I think you will be amazed at what you will learn. The whole book isn't about financial issues but the rest of it provokes thought too.
I seriously think we should sell beer at sporting events. Our attendance would increase dramatically, IMO. Especially in basketball.
I actually see no problems with selling beer at football games because many people (and at least half of the students) have already been drinking quite a bit in the tailgating lots. Selling beer wouldn't really increase the amount of drunk people at the football games a considerable amount. PLUS it would create a huge amount of revenue. I'm sure they would sell beer for $4-5 per cup. I'm sure they could buy it for less than $1 per cup. That's a lot of profit.
And students are not really interested in buying beer at a game...5 bucks a beer is to much $ for me...thats why many students carry it in with them so IMO the only people "really" buying it would be the non-students...I have no problem with that!
They would need to enforce the no going out at half time policy to really get some money also..
I think the half time pass out policy has ended at the end of last season. The only reason it was still allowed was because of the lack of bathrooms. And since that is being addressed this year, we should not be let out this coming fall.
