Men's swimming

I'm really curious why ISU doesn't have men's swimming and why they don't bring it back, correct me if I'm wrong I'm just presenting what I know. They already have women's swimming, the sports run at the same time and at the DIII level they have meets together as well(I think they do at DI level too but I'm not sure there). Of any sport to bring back I'd say this would be the cheapest and easiest, again referencing the DIII coaches are even shared.

If you bring back men's swimming, what womens sport are you going to add to make it even. That is where the extra expense is.

Title IX isn't really an issue with ISU as far as I know; I'm pretty sure we can add two more men's sports and still be within the legal number. I could be wrong though...

I would think at least 1 anyways. Football and Wrestling should be canceled out by Volleyball and Softball right?

It's not number of sports, it's number of scholarships. So volleyball most definitely does not cancel out football.

I don't know how the team used to do in actual swimming, but when I was in school those boys could sure put down the beer.

They were perennially ranked #21-30. In fact, men's swimming was the last ISU squad (any sport) to win a conference championship (1995) until Fizer/Tinsley teamed up in 2000.

Football: 85
Basketball: 13

Wrestling: 9.9
TOTAL: 125

ISU Women's Scholarships Available:
Basketball: 15
Tennis: 8
Volleyball: 12
CC/Track: 18
Golf: 6
Gymnastics (12)
Soccer: 14
Softball: 12
Swimming: 14
TOTAL: 111 Scholarships

There are more men's scholly's available than women's but NCAA rules states that schools must"Provide participation opportunities for women and men that are substantially proportionate to their respective rates of enrollment of full-time undergraduate students" (NCAA Gender Equity and Title IX)

Now I coudn't find anything on the ISU website about male:female ratio of the student body, but the ISU Facebook network shows that 49% of ISU users are male, 39% are female, and apparently the other 12% are undecided

While not exact, it gives a general idea of the student body composition. There is a fine line between "too many scholarships" available to men compared to women, and the #'s are designed to follow average student composition.

Men's swimming will not be at ISU unless a women's sport is added.

I hate Title IX. There had to be a better way to bring more women's sports to schools.

The facility is horrible even for students who just want to swim not to mention swim teams. Only 3 teams in the Big XII have men's swimming Texas, A&M and Missouri.

Beyer Hall in its time was a great facility and actually hosted the NCAA Championships. The pool is actually a fast pool (don't get me into what makes for a fast pool or we could be here a while).
A few problems remain. In this day in age, Beyer isn't a DI pool. For this reason, I was against the Rec renovations. Before the revovations happened, there were small discussions of a new competition pool being built and Men's Swimming being brought back around 2011. Without the new pool, I don't see Men's Swimming coming back.

As for the team prior to it being cut, it was very successful through the years, and until last year, had won a conference title more recently than Wrestling. The Shadow is right that in the 90's the Men's team was consistently ranked and boasted several All-Americans.

When the team was cut, BVDV blamed everything on the budget to those trying to help(but didn't try to raise any money). Title IX was a factor, but not the largest one. Cyclone Swimming never had a full compliment of the allowed scholarships anyway. Sadly, KU and Nebraska also cut their men's programs within weeks of each other. The Nebraska situation was interesting in that NU was cheating and had gotten caught by the NCAA. Their AD (Bill Byrne) cut the program (he also cut the program at Oregon) and then soon left for A&M.

Oh yes, they also liked a lot of beer.

Unfortunately, men's swimming is a dying sport these days as I beleive there are less than 40 teams in the entire country. This is why I really don't see them ever bringing it back, right now there are only three teams in the conference that have Men's swimming (Missouri, Texas, and Texas A&M). If they get to the point of adding sports I think you will see baseball first, then either Men's Tennis or Men's Soccer. Despite being cut at ISU baseball is still a growing sport in D1, with two more teams added last year bringing the total up to 293. Pretty sad that 293 other schools out there can field a team but we can't.... At the same time there are 202 other men's soccer teams.

According to the NCAA, there are over 130 Division 1 Men's swim programs.

Your point about Men's soccer is a good point. It would be much cheaper to have a Men's soccer team as the facilities are now in place and wouldn't require an overhaul of CapTimm.

Sadly, I don't see baseball, or swimming coming back in our lifetimes.
