How did you become a Clone fan?

Grandma was an employee, dad was an alum, uncle is currently an employee, and the rest of my family is from Ames. So I was basically bred a clone fan.

I'm a big sports fan and moved to the area 37 years ago. Started going to a game or two a year in fb and bb. I now have season tickets in both. Also a softball fan. Will be visting a daughter in Texas when ISU plays Baylor next week and plan on driving to Waco from Austin for the game.

Dad went to State, mom went to EIU. As a kid I cheered for both, but I've always had a soft spot for the underdog. Growing up in the 90's this naturally lent me to cheering for the Clones, as football was my favorite sport. By the time the five game run started I had been cheering for the Clones over the Hawks consistently. We went to the 2002 game at Kinnick (WOW) and started to grow my dislike for the Hawks after Herky drenched my dad and I with a super soaker for wearing red and gold. When I sent in my college applications a couple months later, I was set an ISU, as I had fallen in love with the campus, but still would cheer for Iowa when they didn't play us. I started at ISU in the fall of 2003. After witnessing a Hawk (try) to put an Iowa hat on the statue of Jack Trice following the '03 game I realized what a bunch of jerk offs and white trash pond scum they were and the hate has been on ever since.

I grew up in NE Iowa (Aplington area) in a very non-sports family. I was a fan of all schools in the state at the time. My brother went to ISU first, which caused me to lean that way, then when I attended ISU, that sealed the deal. That, and finally noticing the arrogance of the EIU fans made me come to hate the black and gold.

I grew up in NE Iowa but my grandfather went to ISU games and would take me to a couple FB and BB games each year starting when I first showed an interest in sports. Probably the greatest moment I experienced was in the armory when we were right down by where the team entered the locker room. Zaid Abdul-Aziz (Don Smith) patted me on the head after a game as the team was leaving the floor. That was probably in 1965 and I was about nine years old. That single gesture by him made me a Cyclone for life and years later I finally got to meet him as an adult and relay that to him.
He also was a huge baseball fan and took me to many Twins games starting in the very first year they moved to Minnesota from Washington.
Thanks Grandpa, I still miss you every day!!

I think the fact that most people responding are "naturalized" versus "native" Iowa State fans. That bodes well for us, as a "growing" program.

When you're born and raised in Cedar Rapids, it's easy to be a Hawkeye fan. Not that I really gave a hoot about sports while growing up. My folks weren't into it.

Then I decided I wanted to be an engineer. So I went to an engineering camp at ISU, fell in love with the place and never looked back. Although I changed majors in my soph year to JLMC.

Loved having those cheap student season tickets during the Walden years. Living through that will test the mettle of any fan, but I made it through to the other side with my degree and my allegiance solidly in hand.

My college buddys get together every year for the ISU-Iowa game, even though we're spread out all over the country. It's good to be a born-again Cyclone.

Grew up a Hawk fan, easiest way to get hunting or fishing permission is still to wear a hawkeye hat!!!! Anyhow, a time in my life when i was choosing a direction as far as a career and figured out that Lame Iowa didnt like Architects - so, chose to become a cyclone and never looked back....

Its funny now to argue with Hawk fans, the ol saying about them is soooo true....

What do cyclone fans and hawkeye fans have in common - neither went to Iowa!!!! Read into that comment all you want - thats what its meant for!!!!!

I'm used to the Cyclone lifestyle, it sooo much closer to my beloved Cubbies.....

2008 will be the year for the cubbies and cyclones to rise to prominence!!!!!
