I had a buddy at ISU tht was on a full academic scholarship; got 2 straight 0.0 GPA's (freshman year) and was told not to come back the next semester. That's not good use of a scholarship...

There were a couple kids on my floor freshman year that were like that.... it's kinda sad.

He's a really nice guy if not a little socially out-of-place (but who wouldn't be in that situation?) We went to high school together and bump into each other from time to time on campus. Genuine genius, and one thing that they left out of the article is he was a National Merit Finalist. He could have gone anywhere so Iowa State probably feels very honored that he stuck around (although I guarantee his parents wouldn't let him go anywhere else).

TRUE AND VALIANT

What peers?

Social development is overrated, imo.

Re: Iowa State graduates 18 year old - the same week he graduated high school

I've met him once or twice. To me he is awkward because he doesn't really know much about "common" sports. He did have quite of few smart friend though. They talked alot about computer games and stuff that I am not familiar with. He is definitely not as awkward as other brilliant people I have met or seen.

I do have one question though...

How do you get a job if you graduate so early? I know he is going to grad school, but if he was an engineer or something would a company hire an 18 year old?

Glad you caught that. We actually homeschool - I wish we were as good as this guy's parents. He should be studied and genome mapped to see where the brilliant gene is located.

I would hire someone that smart in a heart beat. Even at 18 I can see no downside, yeah a few people might complain about the young upstart but hey dude has skills.

To me it would be like asking if anyone would draft Lebron James at 18.

Add me to the list of folks who know him. He was in my Latin class one semester. He is kind of quirky, but who among us isn't?

Hey now...lets not equate credits with dorkiness...I amassed 213 when I graduated...of course that took me 6 years and I only have one B.S. to show for it, stupid non-decisiveness

I think most guys would be shocked at how much "brains" are attractive to women. Even the non-"zombie stripper" kind of women.

And I know certain women who look at awkward men with a certain "lioness spotting a raw steak" kind of way.

Of course, I also know awkward, brainy men who unknowingly reject women who throw themselves at them.

That is amazing but I wouldn't want to be like that. I liked going to college like everyone else. I think he missed out on a lot.
