ISU Picks up Baseball Recruit?

Aric Sankot out of Jefferson High is listed as a recruit for Iowa State.

PGCrosschecker - 2008 High School Baseball - College Commitments

Now, I know ISU has club teams, but I thought it was a little strange that a player would show up in a recruiting database? Anybody have any ideas why?

Re: ISU Picks up Baseball Recruit?

so after browsing that link you posted, i noticed two (maybe 3) recruits all on that page, attending Iowa Western CC. Anybody ever heard of this and why are they getting all the recruits?

They are a fairly good Juco for baseball. A lot of kids that are gifted players go there to make up their minds whether or not they want to pursue baseball.

Re: ISU Picks up Baseball Recruit?

It could be a grade issue or could be that they are marginal for a D1 program or it could be they are a draft and follow for a Major League team(or the above post). I don't know all the ins and outs about that but it has something to do with the MLB team holding that players rights for those two years but no money exchanging hands. ( I am sure someone can add more info to that.)

As for the ISU recruit it has to be a typo or we will be getting a surprise announcement soon?

Many players are attracted to Jucos in baseball because they will be eligible for the MLB draft after 2 years. Players going to a 4 year school have to wait for 3 years. As a comparison, the NFL requires all players to wait 3 years to be draft eligible.

Re: ISU Picks up Baseball Recruit?

There are about a dozen different reasons people play Juco baseball, I did... The main reasons a 'good' player will is to get noticed by scouts or bigger schools. Baseball is a sport that you have to play to get better. You don't benefit from a redshirt year and or sitting the bench. Your very top high school players will go pro or D1. The next group, 8-20 round type, will likely go Juco so they can play, improve their stock, and maybe get a better college offer. I would say most top 25 Juco baseball teams could destroy most D1 schools in baseball and still do better in the classroom.

If you go Juco you are actually eligable for the draft EVERY year.

Thanks for the correction. I knew that they could go sooner, but had forgotten that there was actually no restriction.
