State Gym Project

The news flash reports "major renovation and addition at State Gym." If I'm remembering the right place, this building was old when I was there in the sixties. The only time I was in it was for intramurals on an old basketball court. What is it used for today?

Why not us?

The basketball team practices in there, yes that's right, our Division I basketball team practices in there.

It's also used for intramurals on that same court, and people can work out in there as well during the day

"I just back into town and I hear all this stuff, and Buster Olney is making my team up now and [Genske] wants to tell me who is going to pitch here. No one is going to tell us who to put on our team and no one on ESPN is going to tell us who should pitch for my team. " -Gardy

Wasn't there buzz at one time of building a practice facility for the basketball team?

Yes, but the funding is not there yet.

However, I know that the university is finally going to own Hilton starting this summer so I wonder if the team will be able to practice in the Coliseum more often now

Well, at least they won't have to pay the Iowa State Center to practice there now. One thing about athletic budgets, comparing between schools is not apples to apples. Once the athletic department takes control of Hilton, they are going to have an increased budget...and larger expenses. As far as I know, they weren't even getting concession money from Hilton. Or at least not all of it. Now they should. But they'll have to pay the concession people as well as people who set up the basketball floor and clean Hilton. I guess it remains to be seen if they can run the facilities better. But the budget should look better compared to other Big XII schools....at least not far and away dead last.

Do or do not, there is no try .....Yoda

If that renovation does move ahead, at least the BB team will have a nicer place to practice and show recruits until they have their own facility built.

When did they start practicing in State Gym? The men practiced in Hilton in the mid 80s. State Gym was all intramurals and classes back then.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.
