Re: Hok fans vandalize artwork on ISU campus

Does anybody have a better picture of this that they could post here? When I load the page, half of the image is covered up by the stupid advertisement off to the right.

IIRC, this isn't the first time this sculpture has been vandalized. I think it was just a few years ago that somebody took a marker and drew on it. I think they put nipples on the girls or something like that. It took months to restore it after that. This is just stupid.

EDIT: Never mind--I just loaded the image in a separate window. Here it is...

Again...stupid.

Re: Hok fans vandalize artwork on ISU campus

When I first heard of this, my reaction was "Good prank, and since they used sidewalk chalk, it'll wash off quickly". After I've had a chance to think it over, my initial reaction was wrong.

Unlike stone like granite or marble, limestone has relatively large pores. Any substance applied to limestone will take "forever" to remove due to the penetration into the rock that happens through the pores. Have you ever seen a limestone slab where spray paint grafitti has been removed? If they don't sandblast the whole thing, you can still read the reverse image of the grafitti from yards away.

Plus, the original story I heard about this incident didn't mention the "hawkeyes" used in the grafitti. That right there's grounds for breaking out the tar & feathers, IMHO.

A drunk? Oak-Elm is a long ways from Campustown, and is pretty well hidden from view from Lincoln Way. There is absolutely zero chance that a drunk person- chalk or not- just happened to wander through a deserted residential corner of campus late at night, without knowing there were sculptures there. This was premeditated. They may not have seen the statues before, but at bare minimum they knew they were there and went there with the express purpose of defacing them. If this was during the school year, I would say it could maybe have been an ISU student who's too dumb to cheer for the Cyclones, but there's absolutely nobody in that part of campus, and drunks don't wander that far east in the summer.

Okay, I literally only thought of this as I was writing that last sentence, but there are some visitors on campus right now. Some Iowa Games people are staying in MWL, as well as an special needs camp or something similar. Both groups have had a significant proportion of Hok clothing walking around, and I got heckled for riding a bicycle (...?) by a really fat guy wearing a too-small shirt. It's plausible that one of them did it; they're the chalk-using type. That doesn't make it any better; in fact doing that on a campus that is nice enough to host your redneck activities for you makes it significantly worse.

I can't tell you why that statue, but the only explanation for the sidewalk chalk is that they had just gotten out of class in IC and just threw their bookbag in the car with their sidewalk chalk they used in class and then wrote on the statue.

This has Scooby Doo written all over it.

You know, where one of the grown ups pretends to be in distress, but they are really the perps...and they would have gotten away with it were it not for the meddling kids?

I think one of you actually went out and did this, to come back here and say 'Hawk fans! Look what they did!'

Time to start investigating bmuff.

I was actually thinking the same thing although not one of "us" (us being CFers). More along the lines of an ISU student doing it then, as an afterthought, writing 'hawkeyes' on it because they realized what a stupid thing they did and wanted to implicate someone worthy (I guess I should say 'also worthy') of the stupid title.

Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions.

Are you studying the migratory patterns of drunks now? You don't have to go to the bars to drink.

I normally enjoy your posts, but in this one you give yourself and the Hawks too much credit and you smell of a sense of superiority.

To actually suggest that ISU fans would do something like this just so we could say "Hawks bad"? Get a grip man - we just don't care about the Hawks that much.

Of course not, but there are also no students living in any of those buildings for the summer. Summer housing for students is only in Buchanan and Freddy, plus the few conferences that are using MWL and Martin right now. Drunks in Freddy are going to stay in Freddy, I know all the drunks in Buchanan, and drunks in Campustown are either going to stay there or wander west. There's nothing east except frat houses. So lol, yes, I'm studying migratory patterns of drunks. It's interesting.

The Hawk fan that did it must've tried to make out with the statueand when she just "ignored" him, he got his payback by marking it up. He was just mad that he was denied on his best chance to ever get laid.

I think this was premeditated, but I don't think the long term damage was. I think they didn't know better than that limestone would be a problem. A stupid prank, but it probably went worse than intended.

According to my "rep," I am no longer a glorious beacon of light...but a name known to all
